Defence to pay for road upgrades to new DefHQ

Thumper 10 October 2007 23

The SMH is reporting that, unusually, the Dept of defence will contribute $8.2M towards a road upgrade between Canberra and the new defence HQ.

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has called on the NSW and ACT governments to contribute another $6.5 million between them for other works on the road.

Somehow i can’t see the ACT and NSW State governments chipping on this one.

You will get speed cameras before better roads in that case V twin. Apparently they save lives.

As someone who commutes in the opposite direction to the bulk of traffic on the KIngs Highway, I welcome the upgrade. Lets hope that the bickering between the RTA and Roads ACT does’nt waste too much time and money. The condition of the ACT section is a best appalling. The benifits to the community won’t be in saving time travelling to the coast, it will save lives.

Thanks Troy, we here on this site of the interweb struggle at times with the concept that if we were actually interested in the media release we might find it on the minister’s web site.

Can you also tell me how to get to the hotmail?

Hingo, care to explain why you think a PRIVATELY funded organisation (union) should do PUBLIC works ?

Or are you just being nonsensical ?

Now Thumper, we know they aren’t – they’re too busy making shitty decisions that don’t work for the people that elected them.

I still think a direct road to the beach is better. I’m sick of going through Boganville to get to the beach.

Speaking of Bogans, has anyone seen the new Bogan ‘dolls’ at the man shop place in Tuggers? Hehe.

Indeed, we need a four lane highway all the way to the coast, with a large tunnel under the Clyde Mountain.

Iemma and Stanhope, are you listening?

JC JC 1:09 am 11 Oct 07

Yeah by passing QBN would be a better option even more so for this new complex. No point bypassing Bungendore or Braidwood if you want to speed the coast trip up the time saving would be SFA in most cases.

nyssa76 nyssa76 10:08 pm 10 Oct 07

Hey, they could also bypass Queanbeyan! Then it wouldn’t take people that long to get there or to the beach…

Woohoo!

I see no evidence that the local area will benefit from HQ JOC being there. The facility pays NO rates to teh local (struggling) Palerang council. The housing for the facility is slated to be in Bruce, and Gunghalin. Hundreds of cars will use local roads through Qbn and Macs Reef/Bungendore to access it. It’s nothing but a nuisence.

And they’ve wrecked a beautiful valley. It’s bulldozed, builded and lit up at night like a christmas tree.

nyssa76 nyssa76 8:48 pm 10 Oct 07

Why aren’t the Govt focusing on bypassing Bungendore and Braidwood so it’s less time to the coast?

That’s a better option than a Defence HQ out in the middle of the sticks.

sepi sepi 7:14 pm 10 Oct 07

Because Bungendore is in a marginal seat silly.

OpenYourMind2 OpenYourMind2 5:32 pm 10 Oct 07

Just remind me again why we needed a Joint Operation Centre near Bungendore???

Get the NSW state government to liaise with the ACT government and then build it!

hingo_VRCalaisV6 hingo_VRCalaisV6 3:46 pm 10 Oct 07

Better still, get the Unions to pay for it rather than promoting Rally’s that are irrelevant to Australians.

Maelinar Maelinar 3:23 pm 10 Oct 07

Better still, get defence to build the road.

let them display their inefficiency.

thetruth thetruth 2:58 pm 10 Oct 07

Simple make the road for defence purposes only and watch the outcry

VYBerlinaV8...the_original_and_best VYBerlinaV8...the_original_and_best 2:18 pm 10 Oct 07

More typical Defence inefficiency.

hingo_VRCalaisV6 hingo_VRCalaisV6 2:06 pm 10 Oct 07

Where the money comes from is irrelevant because its up to the States on how they budget their spending.
