Defence to pay for road upgrades to new DefHQ

By Thumper - 10 October 2007 23

The SMH is reporting that, unusually, the Dept of defence will contribute $8.2M towards a road upgrade between Canberra and the new defence HQ.

Defence Minister Brendan Nelson has called on the NSW and ACT governments to contribute another $6.5 million between them for other works on the road.

Somehow i can’t see the ACT and NSW State governments chipping on this one.

What’s Your opinion?

Yeah by passing QBN would be a better option even more so for this new complex. No point bypassing Bungendore or Braidwood if you want to speed the coast trip up the time saving would be SFA in most cases.

Hey, they could also bypass Queanbeyan! Then it wouldn’t take people that long to get there or to the beach…

Woohoo!

I see no evidence that the local area will benefit from HQ JOC being there. The facility pays NO rates to teh local (struggling) Palerang council. The housing for the facility is slated to be in Bruce, and Gunghalin. Hundreds of cars will use local roads through Qbn and Macs Reef/Bungendore to access it. It’s nothing but a nuisence.

And they’ve wrecked a beautiful valley. It’s bulldozed, builded and lit up at night like a christmas tree.

Why aren’t the Govt focusing on bypassing Bungendore and Braidwood so it’s less time to the coast?

That’s a better option than a Defence HQ out in the middle of the sticks.

Because Bungendore is in a marginal seat silly.

OpenYourMind2 5:32 pm 10 Oct 07

Just remind me again why we needed a Joint Operation Centre near Bungendore???

Get the NSW state government to liaise with the ACT government and then build it!

Better still, get the Unions to pay for it rather than promoting Rally’s that are irrelevant to Australians.

Maelinar 3:23 pm 10 Oct 07

Better still, get defence to build the road.

let them display their inefficiency.

thetruth 2:58 pm 10 Oct 07

Simple make the road for defence purposes only and watch the outcry

VYBerlinaV8...the_or 2:18 pm 10 Oct 07

More typical Defence inefficiency.

hingo_VRCalaisV6 2:06 pm 10 Oct 07

Where the money comes from is irrelevant because its up to the States on how they budget their spending.

Thumper 2:01 pm 10 Oct 07

Um, like schools…

A clear cut state responsibility.

States get heaps from GST. They shouldn’t complain.

oh, like the road they are talking about!

Tempestas 1:44 pm 10 Oct 07

Lets all say it together.

The Commonwealth takes 60% of the Govt income but only spends 40% of govt expenditure, meaning that they can always put a gun to the states heads. That Federal funding seems to only show up in Federal marginal seats might have something to do with the states worries. (Not that they couldn’t do a better job with what they have).

Its really easy for the Commonwealth to through some bird seed out and then crow the States won’t put in their share. If all states funding was untied they just might have a bit of an argument

Both NSW and ACT Government funding is tight as a fishes arse. Especially with their health systems going to shit. I’m sure this is the last thing they want to fork out money for. Somehow it will be Howards fault.
