Simon Corbell has proclaimed the new suburb names downstream of the dam to be Denman Prospect and Molonglo.

“Lord Thomas and Lady Gertrude Denman held key roles in the birth of Canberra and I believe commemorating their name is a small token of our appreciation of their lasting work,” Mr Corbell said.

“The name is a link from the past to the future for this Centenary suburb, so it is fitting to be naming “Denman Prospect? in the lead up to the centenary of Canberra.

“The use of the suffix „Prospect? meaning view, vision or the outlook for the future is also considered significant in the context of the naming of Canberra almost 100 years ago. The inclusion of “Prospect? will also distinguish the new suburb from Denman in New South Wales.”

Lady Denman is well known for standing upon the newly laid foundation stones and pronouncing, “I name the capital of Australia – Canberra.”

Lord Denman served as Governor-General of Australia from 1911-14. On 12 March 1913, he inaugurated the site of the future capital and laid the first Foundation Stone of the Commencement Column on Capital Hill.

As with all Canberra suburbs, the suburb?s street names will have a theme, with „activism and reform? being the theme in Denman Prospect.

The second suburb to be developed in Molonglo Valley Stage 2 will be named Molonglo and will contain a large group centre which will serve as the commercial centre for the district.

The streets in Molonglo the suburb should be named after famous Mongols and Mongolian Landmarks – Genghis Khan Boulevard or Kublai Khan Parade have a nice ring to it. Ditto Xanadu Lane and Lake Hovsgol Street.

Genghis Khan Boulevard sounds good. But Xanadu Lane? A place, Where nobody dared to go………..

The road leading to Lake Asbestos, um, I mean North Weston Pond could be called Moron Avenue (named after the Mongolian town of Moron, of course, and not the ACT government and bureaucracy who wasted $100m of taxpayer money on the damn project – a future case study in ‘Urban Design and Infrastructure Project Management 101: What Not to Do’ and ‘The Great Policy Failures of all Time and How we Can Learn from Them’ courses throughout Australia)

In fact, I’d rather be here than *anywhere* in the Muddle East. Or Africa (plague, famine). Or China (Tyrants). Or Russia (More tyrants). or Central America (Drug Lords). Really, most places in the world seem to suck compared to Giralang. 🙂

If you think Giralang is so good, you are just going to faint with joy when you move to the inner north….

I wonder if ‘first world problem’ responses should be put into the Godwin’s Law category. Obviously almost anything we complain about in Australia is minor in comparison to much of the rest of the world.

I’ve lived in the inner north, and I thought it was pretty crap. Worn out beat up poorly designed uninsulated cold old falling down houses that cost a bizarrely huge amount of money combined with lots of burglars and junkies floating around. We have our burglars and junkies in Giralang too, but I like to think they’re a better class of burglar and junkie.

In Giralang I live in a reasonably modern architect designed 4 bedroom house on a 1200m block with heaps of natural light and everything I’d want in a home. And the best thing of all is that it was affordable, and I’ll be making the last payment off the mortgage in 14 weeks time, 6 years after we bought it. A similar place in the inner north (if one exists) would’ve been twice the price, and I’d still be paying it off in 20 years.

Why are suburb names in Canberra so boring and predictable.. mostly surnames, I think it adds to the feeling people have about Canberra being souless, planned and weird. Dont get me started on the double-barrelled street name abonimations in the newer suburbs. Can’t we have a non surname or ‘notable person’ name for anything?

Streets in Giralang are named after stars and astronomers. Canopus, Fornax, Chuculba etc. So if you live elsewhere in Barry Smith Crescent or something equally mundane then count yourself lucky. I live in an oddly named street, and I’ve never been able to tell someone where I live without being forced to spell it out.

Still, it’s all relative. I’m glad that I live in a place where people feel street names are worth a whinge, rather than living in Baghdad for example, where they complain about the closeness of the explosions and how often the death squads drive past.

I just wish they’d stop naming suburbs and roads after the same people, it’s confusing. E.g. I got a text from a friend about how the road was blocked at the corner of Southern Cross and Florey one day and assumed he meant the lights at the corner of Florey, not Florey Drive.

On the other hand, I’d drink a ten gallon can of cold vomit before I’d live in a suburb named after Billy McMahon.

Didn’t notice that at Costco when I last visited…

Place Names Committee Place, Denman Prospect.

The Place Names Committee shows again how dysfunctional it is and how silly is the Act. Denman Prospect sounds like a miners lease. The father of Canberra, John Gale continues to be ignored! Gale lobbied successfully for Yass Canberra as the site for the national capital. Maybe HLB Lasseter – The Gleaner, will get a Guernsey in Denman Prospect.
The Molonglo Camp was built in 1918 where now Molonglo Mall is. Molonglo was later changed to Fyshwick. This new group centre will have to buy the business name Molonglo Mall from the current owners or street names will have to change.

As a public art installation they could snaffle the Dog on the Tuckerbox from Gundagai, put it at the local shopping centre and call it The Dog Returning To Its Vomit.

Gungahlin Al12:13 pm 16 Jun 12

Molonglo suburb, in Molonglo district, in Molonglo electorate. Yep I’m sure no-one will ever get confused about that…

The group shopping centre there should be called The banana republic. That would be awesome, especially if it was full of poorly-run businesses and closing-down or empty shops!

They again refused to name suburbs after two former prime ministers, Sir John Gorton and Sir William McMahon. Labor running true to form in cleansing the city of any acknowledgement of Liberal party identities.

When the plans were drawn up for Gungahlin under the Carnell government there was a suburb named McMahon. When the Stanhope government came to office that name was junked and the suburb renamed Kenny. I’m surprised they haven’t changed the name of Fraser to Whitlam.

They should have called it Billy Bigears.

Blame yourself for that one, that really is dim.

Obviously referring to two streets intersecting.

They could name every suburb in Canberra Florey, and every street in Canberra Florey Street, and it still wouldn’t make a microscopic contribution towards adequately honoring the deeds of that man.

He’s probably the single greatest Australian of all time, in terms of his contribution to the wellbeing of the entire human race.

On the other hand, I’d drink a ten gallon can of cold vomit before I’d live in a suburb named after Billy McMahon.

And as for Denman Prospect, well, that name simply sucks.

Never mind that, where’s Episode 3?!

(Although it’s Nova Prospekt your refer to)

No.

Interesting. I had to correct from that spelling every time I wrote the word in my first comment. I can’t immediately think of many words which have an ‘n’ followed by an ‘m’. Inmate may be the most relevant here! Something about the ‘e’ before the ‘nm’ is genuinely difficult.

Denman Prospect!

Do the people who decide on suburb names live in any sort of real world?

This appears to be some sort of politically correct in joke, the punchline to remain lost in the depths of a workplace watercooler brainfade.

Get real, you turkeys.

I sure hope that when they make the signs for Denman Prospect they employ someone who can spell. Has anyone else noticed that the signs on the cycle path tunnel under Lady Denman Drive just east of Scrivener Dam are spelt “Lady Denham Drive”?

If Labor was really into that, wouldn’t they rename Holt to “Float” or perhaps “Red Submarine”

Regardless, two useless Prime Ministers. Better forgotten.

Why is there a need to distinguish ACT suburbs from other places with the same name? I think people know the difference between Parkes ACT and Parkes NSW. Also there’s a Kingston in Qld and Tas and two in SA.

There’s a joke about Keating Arrogance or Insults or something in there. “Flogged with a Warm Lettuce Circuit” has a kind of ring to it…

If these are the last two suburbs, and Wright, Coombs and Sulman are the first three, what happened to the other eight? I read that Molonglo was originally planned to be 13 suburbs but I can’t find the missing names?

It’s the two suburbs in Molonglo stage 2, which is the last part of development on the south side of the river.

The other as yet unnamed suburbs are all on the north side.

The Prime Ministers who haven’t been commemorated with a Canberra suburb name yet appear to be Menzies (presumably because there’s already a Menzies in South Australia, Western Australian and Queensland), McEwen, Gorton (unlikely to get a guernsey as it’s only one letter away from Gordon), McMahon, Whitlam, Fraser (which is already a suburb name), Hawke (probably too close to Hawker), and the last four Keating, Howard, Rudd and Gillard.

I think you have to be dead to have a street/suburb named after you.

Denman Prospect sounds silly, but it might appeal to the upwardly mobile…

Menzies specifically requested no suburb in canberra be named after him.

@SnapperJack

You do know that Fraser was named after Jim Fraser, who was the ALP member for the ACT for 20 years, not Malcolm, don’t you?

Will the land be affordable? If not who really gives a s*** what they`re named.

The ACT govt releases the land, thus it will be very expensive (especially if you consider $ per square metre).

No offence to the actual people the suburbs are to be named after.
