Department of Finance branches into new fields of endeavour?

Last week, I spotted this between Kings Avenue and the Blackall St carpark in thr Triangle.

Who knew that the former DOFA, now Department of Finance and Deregulation, was a champion of oak protection? I, for one, applaud their action in preventing the ravages of, presumably, uncaring bureacrats parking their vehicles under these trees.

[ED – nice to see they’re doing something to protect York Park.]

Glad to see the reason why we get no staffing budget this financial year. Do FA have trees to protect.

That “temporary” fence and the signs (there’s several of them) have been around those oaks since at least the middle of this decade (that’s when I first noticed the signs, anyway). It protects them from PM&C parkers, and DFATers too late to get into the DFAT park (usually about 9am sees the last park go, except on Fridays).

The area between the back of PM&C and the Oaks is to be vamped up into “Windsor Walk” which will go along Barton. And the DFAT carpark was flogged off by Finance a while back, they’re going to build a building for the Climate Change Department.

Finance seem to be quite active in property development, they’ve just sold the block opposite the old Wello (behind Minter Ellison bldg) but I don’t know what’s going in there.

The new DOFA! Name was changed at last election.

Who are DOFD?

This is not the only project which DOFA are involved with.

They are apparently the main Gov body involved with an unnamed building starting construction next to Parkes Way, the Civic side of Russell.

The name of the project is very tightly held.

Would have thought AG’s would have been the main client.

DOFD are involved in many construction projects so it is not necessarily a surprise, including the Anzac Pde roadworks and the Menzies Walk. And the building site you mention is not a secret: http://www.asio.gov.au/Media/Contents/new_central_office.aspx

I have only been working in the area for a week and have yet to see any carpark full.

The luxury of turning up about 8:15 and practicing my reverse parking (which is woefully sub-par) is one I shall treasure for the short time I expect to be there.

I do like the idea of DoFD protecting these trees from the depredations of Department of Environment’s construction plans.

I think those are the tree/s that the Duke of York planted during a visit in the 1920s and hence are a heritage site, which is why the protection of trees outweighs the need for parking.

No cars have ever parked under those trees

the oaks are heritage listed, and will be retained an undisturbed, apparently, during construction of the new environment dept building which will sit on the site adjacent the oaks where dfat staff now park.

More like, “temporary protection to palliate jealous ACT Government employees and indicate that public servants in the Parliamentary Triangle are being denied some parking”

This sign has been there for a few years now.
