It must be real estate weekend. Today’s CT has this report, of people camping out overnight for the latest land release in Forde. The keenest punters camped out from Thurday morning through to Saturday morning to ensure they got the best block. With blocks ranging in price from $198,000 to $399,000 (yes – that is correct), just for a block of land, this shows the Canberra real estate market is definitely not slowing down.

When you say there’s plenty of land available… the cheapest block advertised in Gininderra Ponds is $194,000 and it’s the only one under $200,000. Most of the land in West Macgregor is only available to households with incomes below $100,000.

There were comments made that may add conditions of some sort in terms or ensuring that these properties remain accessibility to others should they sell. MMmm

It’s an appalling indictment on the Stanhope government that people have to camp out to get a good block of land. Shame on them, the government which supposedly has an affordable housing strategy.

Could schmucks be considered a apt description ?

Forde: stand in line and protest at the crap access roads to your suburb behind everybody else. Don’t even think about complaining about broadband until 2010, and just remember your house was built by the lowest bidder.

Have a very nice time, and enjoy all that serenity.

All this does is demonstrate that people have money to buy desirable property. There’s no way well located property is going to drop in price while this is the case.

Hang on – it seems like the people camping weren’t exactly short of a quid. They wanted the best blocks – the ones in the upper price range. It’s not like they were battlers or strugglers. I think that it was just a case of the chosen land release system which saw this come about.

Lots of us can’t.

I thought people couldn’t afford it now.

True, but it is pathetic that people have to camp out to get a decent size block.

No wonder Canberra is going to hell in a handbasket. Pretty soon no one will be able to afford a home.

There’s plenty of land available in the ACT at the moment- Ginninderra Ponds in Dunlop and Mcgregor West for example.

The reason people are camped out to get Forde land is because our God Stanhope does not create all land equally. Residents of Forde can expect far greater services and amenities than in other current land releases.
Why would you live in the articially created lower socio-economic (read slum) areas of Canberra, when you can live in Forde.
