Canberra’s newest casual eatery, Dessert Castle, opens its doors to the public today.

The owners have spent the better part of a year creating a themed venue that lives up to its regal namesake, with stone walls, chandeliers, creeping ivy and an archway leading into the seating area.

The menu is extensive; with co-founder Chuan Wong explaining that the restaurant’s aim is to be “the ultimate dessert destination”. The types of sweets on offer range from individual cheesecakes and tarts to gourmet chocolates to frozen yogurt with all the toppings you can imagine. If you’re looking for something savoury, there are also burgers and salads available, and you can wash everything down with a hot beverage from the coffee station.

Prices are very reasonable, with cakes priced at $6.50, chocolates at $2 and frozen yogurt charged by weight. “One of our main target markets is university students, so we want to keep our prices very competitive”, says Wong. The low price point paired with the ambiance of the venue should make the restaurant an attractive option for causal dates, post movie snacks and late night sweet tooth cravings.

Located on the corner of Childers Lane and Hutton Street in Civic, this is the flagship Dessert Castle, which will act as a concept store with the aim of creating a chain of restaurants.

Dessert Castle is open 8am-10pm weekdays and 10am-10pm Saturdays.

I went past there today and it looks like 3 shops in one, an ice cream bar, a chocolate station and a coffee bar..

Haha fair enough, they kinda are trying to do a lot at once! But I reckon it might be good for an indecisive group of people, something for everyone maybe! Will have to see if it catches on, or if people would prefer to go to specialty stores as you do 🙂

It’s more that there is 3 separate counters. As in 3 separate staff have to serve you. Not get something from each section and just pay once.

Hmm…not sure about $6.50 for a sweet morsel appealing to many uni students.

When I was a uni student I could afford $6.50! Not where where else you are going to get a cake much cheaper except coffee chains or McCafe or something… plus I think it’s a slightly nicer ambiance 🙂

Hmm…not sure about $6.50 for a sweet morsel appealing to many uni students. Maybe if a few buy their two minute noodles in bulk they could swing a piece to share.

I ‘won’ an invite to the launch of this place. When I got there I found out I had to pay half price for everything – which is no different to what is available to everyone this week. As I had taken my daughter I didn’t want to disappoint her so stayed and bought her dessert. So I’m not exactly sure what my prize was.

I don’t recommend the place

This place was advertised as being an amazing place for desserts. MEH !

I went past there today and it looks like 3 shops in one, an ice cream bar, a chocolate station and a coffee bar.

Also the food looked store bought from a factory. My assumption was they were all handmade.

Personally I’ll stick to Croissant D’or for sweets and Yoghurtland for frozen yoghurt. At least they have options for people who are lactose intolerant.

Have to agree with the above. I’d been hanging out to try this place but having not really jumped on the frozen yoghurt / ice cream bandwagon, and with cakes you can buy in any half decent coffee shop, I didn’t see anything special. IMHO Ricardo’s still have the best cakes inCanberra.

I’m glad I’m not the only one… Given that I work mear metres from this place I was excited to have something close by for when I wanted a sweet treat. Even more excited when I read that they cater for all “food issues”. Just clearly not in the sweet section. 🙁

Ricardo’s is most definitely the best place in Canberra for cakes. I think I will make a special trip there this weekend to make up for my disapointment.

Diabetes hasn’t taken hold of me yet so I’ll be checking out Dessert Castle tomorrow. I’m a fan of Ricardos too – but have found the mouth org#!m quality to be inconsistent. Their salted caramel cronuts are to die for, but best you ring to see if they’ve sold out before leaving Tuggeranong.
