Development application confirms Myer's Hyperdome exit

I happened across this development application for an extension of the Tuggeranong Hyperdome today which, amongst its extension plans confirms that Myer is closing it’s doors with a remodel of the layout will be replaced with a Big W and other smaller stores.

I can’t say I’m that surprised by the impending closure, as the store doesn’t really sell that much and is very tired looking, and it will be good to see a Big W there instead of going to the crappy Kmart and Target. It will be interesting to see if they can get tenants for the smaller stores given the high shop turnover in the Hyperdome. I’m guessing it will also be the gateway to Myer taking over the David Jones at Woden.

There must be some hope for the centre.. Both Coles and Woolies are going though pretty much full store upgrades.

I’ve known for ages that myers was going to either leave or cut down to one store. Doesn’t suprise me they’re leaving they waste soo much space and dont have the range of their other stores in other capital cities.

I’ve also heard that Target wants a store in woden, and they were planning to steal a level off DJ’s (have to be the bottom they can’t take the top (no access) and middle would be stupid. I dont see how it will work though the new store in belconnen and Big W in civic along with all the many clothes stores in the new section is killing their market.

The main thing that the hyperdome exists for is the Food court. ITs been through a few designs over the years (bushrangers theme wasnt too bad). The worst thing is that its all dumped together and the menu is always bad.

Bunnings should have been placed much closer to the mall and the mall is a dark cave of no light. The bowling alley.. should have been part of the mall!

They should gut myer and place an Ikea and laser skirmish!

Gut the stores between the lake and the mall and make a decent restraunt district for those of us that like to go out, even some decent clubs!

My guess is that tuggeranong is only interested in a certain demographic, it really needs to change and have stuff for everyone.

As far as I can make out from the plans, the existing entrance from the car park into Myer will become an emergency exit only and the area will become a loading dock.
From the patterns I’ve seen, people who park in the 1/3 to half of the car park up the Bus Interchange end tend to go in through the Myer entry, that’s going to make for a bit of a hike to the other entries and won’t do much for traffic for the new tenants.

You can always get in through the loading zone and hallway near the toilets coming out at the current entrance to Myers near Priceline. Losing Myer will be a shame as the next nearest is Civic which is quite a hike – Myers at least provided something a step up from KMart and Target in clothing, homewares and kids stuff. but the funiture section was a waste of time.

How many Big W’s can one regional city take? Already have Gungahlin, Belconnen, Civic and Woden, and now to add Hyperdome and the former Brand Depot site???

Look at that list, and let me know which stores are southside? Belco, Civic, Gungahlin are all north, Brand Depot is remote from anywhere, leaving the Woden store as the only southside store. I suspect if any store would be to close, it would be a northside store.

No Big W at Belco

Actually there is one.
It’s in the ‘new’ area of the mall just inside from the bus interchange.

Nope, you’re thinking of Target.

Oops.

Yep, you’re right.

Something I don’t get is the “prime” location above the Centre Court which has a window overlooking Tuggeranong. Has always been a wasted opportunity:
Failed restaurant
Failed Go-Lo store
Failed Games arcade and internet cafe
and now a bank which had boarded up the window yet in the extensions, built a balcony?

Then there’s the remodelled entrance directly below where it looks like the didn’t measure it properly. The doors are shoved in with awkward wedged shaped boarded up stores to the side.

Then there’s the hash of a development between the centre and cold markets, culminating in the hideous roof over the al-fresco area.

Whole place is screwed and I think given financial conditions, we won’t see an improvement inside 10 years. This end of town isn’t growing anymore so the dollars won’t flow.

Extending a bricks and mortar outfit that already isn’t doing well makes very little sense.

Have also heard that they may not be letting Santa in again this year as well

Hmmm… this is a tricky one. On the one hand, I’m all for shopping centres toning down the Xmas insanity and it’s not like there aren’t a metric arseload of alternatives for finding a Santa. On the other hand, this could be driven by misguided political correctness rather than them trying to make my life a little less nuts over the festive season. Tough choice.

Not according to the westfield website. Are you sure you’re not thinking of Target

I used to go there, only cause i live very close, but now I tend to rarely go inside the place. For newspapers and groceries i’ll go to Condor or Erindale.
Anything else i’ll go to Woden or the city…

Apparently management has been an issue, but i think have the issues retailers have in the bricks and mortar vs internet issue is shoppingh centrtes charging high rent and having stupid clauses. That said the issue I heard was about having to refit the shop every 5-7 years. I don’t see why thats a problem, but perhaps, if the store was regularly maintained instead of a refit, it could be ok.

Anyway I’l like a JB Hifi, but i really don’t want it inside the Hyperdome 🙂

Westfield have similar clauses (shopfront refurb and opening hours requirements, etc.) and Westfield are not faultering. I think it is location as Tuggers town centre is not in the centre at all and most people will end up shopping locally or shopping at centres where they work etc.

And re: Costco, most US stores do not stock what our store does, it has been tailored for Australians. So the comment about having a US-style Target or K-Mart would be a welcome change— what about a Walmart? I am sure Tuggers already has the Walmart shoppers ready to go!!!

How a bout a Yankee Wal-Mart . From time to time on the net someone sends some wonderful photos of some of their customers, and by hell there are some strange ones.

Not shocked by this, the inept twats that call themselves hyperdome management have been hell bent on destroying any small business in tuggeranong for years, now they have driven off a major business, well done. Have also heard that they may not be letting Santa in again this year as well, I’ll be sticking with a proper major retail centre, not this joke of a place.

What we really need is a US style Target or K-Mart.

you mean like costco?

No, like a US style Target or K-Mart. They are very different from the Costco we have here.

And if they could con(…vince) Dick Smith and Dan Murphy’s to move across from Homeworld, that’d be neat too.

I only travel there for the cinemas, and only because I am sick of paying a million $$ a movie at Dendy and sitting in vomit ‘godknowswhatthisis’ at Hoyts.

Other than that I have very little reason to go any further than Costco or the Famers Markets if I need to get anything outside Queanbeyan, with the noticable exception of Good Games in Lanyon for my geeky needs. Everything else is available in Quangers or the interwebs.

Myer accidentially announced this a few years back… I understand that Myer will be moving into Woden at the old bonner house. David Jones to remain at Woden. Westfield to get a facelift.

damn… i guess its in time for the new centrelink offices for 2013. atm its really hard to access from that area (and from all places around the centre). its so cut off from everywhere and is not pedestrian friendly.

I thought David Jones was still going to be there at woden with myer?

Don’t see how they will fill the new retail outlets when they already have stores boarded up. Many long term retailers are heading for the exits. ie Arnolds Pizza and Songland just to name a few

Not surprised either. Both DJ’s and Myer are outdated concepts. No one these days needs shiny flagship stores stuffed to the gills with wares, or indeed the converse – stores that have been left to rot because they are in the ‘burbs. I always love the way that these stores are eventually held together by gaffer tape all over the floor. The Myer at Tuggers is basically just used as a thoroughfare to the rest of that awful place.

I remember the first time we visited the Hyperdome when we were working out where in Canberra we might live. I was just astounded by it – I thought I had walked back into 1984!

Can’t say that I feel the need for a Big W tho’ when there is a KMart and Target just upstairs.

Knock down the Hyperdome and start again, and this time do it properly….
