Did Andrew Barr get the obesity memo before opening the Mitchell Maccas?

A few people have been remarking how incongruous it is that Katy Gallagher’s spent a large chunk of the election haranguing the public about their fat kids and then Andrew Barr went and officially opened a Maccas at the gates of the city yesterday:

This morning I joined franchisee Hani Sidaros to officially open the Gungahlin region’s newest McDonald’s restaurant in Mitchell.

Gungahlin is Canberra’s fastest growing region with a population now over 47,000. This new McDonald’s is located where Northbourne Avenue meets the Federal Highway to service interstate visitors and local customers from early morning to late at night, seven days a week.

McDonald’s has long been recognised as an excellent employer of young people, instilling a strong work ethic, promoting teamwork and responsibility, and encouraging personal development for their employees.

This new McDonald’s will employ upwards of 100 staff and provide valuable employment opportunities for those seeking work in the hospitality industry.

Now don’t go telling us you never get anything good Gungahlin!

No I think it’s Mitchell?

It’s a good location. McDonalds is many things but very much about location.

I find it strange that I’ve never taken the salad option. Something takes over one I see the menu. I can be impulsive at times. I guess I gotta own my choices in the end. Ok for the record, note to self, try the salad for once. Anyone tried it?

If you believe the boundaries on the map, it is technically in Lyneham. Interestingly, the adjacent petrol station is in Mitchell.

Roughly speaking, it is on the federal highway at EPIC.

The petrol station isn’t in any suburb, it’s outside the boundary.

I don’t know how they can say it’s in Mitchell, by my measurements it’s over 800m from Mitchell and inside Lyneham. Weird.

Although the postal address for EPIC is also in Mitchell when it looks to be in Lyneham too.

I wonder how much McDonalds contribute to party funds.

Do they have poker machines for the kiddies?

Lets hope that Mr Sidaros’s new restaurant actually meets its responsibility to keep the surrounding area reasonably free of McDonald’s litter, unlike his Emu Bank one.

(Johnboy’s economic theory: The quality of Macdonalds staff is inverse to the performance of the economy. When times are good they’re staffed by subliterate retards, when times are bad they get the very best. Right now the economy’s in some trouble I’d say with a marked improvement of maccas staff in recent months)

.

🙂 I am so going to use this

SnapperJack’s companion economic theory: When times are good more people get fat and complacent and eat more McDonalds meaning they can let the quality of their staff slip safe in the knowledge people will still buy their food. When times are bad more people are into health and fitness and buy less McDonalds, therefore they have to get the best staff to make the restaurants more attractive.

I wonder how the owners of Dickson feel….the most busy franchise in ACT ithanks to summernats? I am sure they would have had 1st right of refusal…. Can only have it so good for so long.

Or it’s the same people and now they get people going from the gde to Sydney.
I know I wouldn’t go to Dixon on the way to Sydney from Southside but now I stop at this one instead of Fournier on my way to SSydney

Different owners. However 1st point not bad.

There is something particularly poetically disgusting about building a MacDonald’s next to the farmer’s markets.

I wonder how many pseudo hippies will end up toting a mcCafe mcLatte and McEggRoll around while placing organic rocket into green canvas bags. In fact, Who needs to slog through some smelly shed for food, you can do your weekly shopping right next door without even leaving the car. They have apples and salads, fish and dairy, vegetarian and world foods, are staffed by disadvantaged youth, and their mascot is an artist, why its so green its practically permaculture.

The Roman empire used to put up forts in places they’d conquered, to control the local populace and collect taxes. The corporate empire puts up franchises, but the goal and result are the same.

I wouldn’t have such a problem with selling unhealthy food, I’m just not convinced it is even food.

The biggest problem with McDonalds is the same problem with so much of our lives, the apparent cost to us consumers is in no way reflective of the true impact of each product. I have heard it said that if mcdonalds had to pay for all the pollution, chemical waste, health care costs, environmental degradation, and subsidies
of farming from governments, each quarter pounder would cost $100. Unfortunately our economic system has been unhinged from reality, and corporations so free from responsibility, that we can get burgers for twenty times less, and pass the costs onto the poorest people in the world.

maccas seem to be popping up everywhere- are we really in need of so many?

Someone has to sell all the Brawndo…

I see the Maccas at Kippax is open now too.

And while we’re on the subject of crappy food I notice Pizza Hut at Gungahlin TC has reopened, under new managment, according to the sign.

Not sure what the world record currently stands at for the construction of a single story building, but this would have to be up there in the top 5. Also, maccas seem to be popping up everywhere- are we really in need of so many?, I recall when we only had two, and that sufficed the populus for many a year.

I hope the service at this new one is better than some of the others in Canberra. We used to regularly use Dickson, Weston, Tuggeranong and Woden and all of them nearly always stuff an order up in some way or another. Weston is definitely the worst (especially never expect seared chicken even if you wait for it). It got so ridiculous we finally complained to Macca’s head office, we were offered a $20 voucher at Woden as an appeasement and then, when I went in to use it, I was told that there was no record of the voucher. I gave up and haven’t been back since.

It’s in Lyneham, not Mitchell.

Very, very interesting theory. It could actually make a really awesome employment index, if you were to periodically collect age and education data on Mc Donald’s staff nation wide.

Of course the less retarded staff tend to be the older staff, and my understanding is most fast food restaurants try to avoid employing older staff because they have to pay them more, which would be a problem.

This may come as a shock to some people but eating McDonalds in moderation won`t actually kill you. A large double quarter pounder meal every other day is a pretty horrendous thought but if you choose carefully from their menu you can still eat there and not end up needing a trouser belt that would circle the equator.

Sure, I go around once a week to keep an eye on the economy and the rest of the community.

But I also know vast swathes of the community are eating there and in KFC with dominos on top every single day of the year.

And they’re not carefully selecting off the healthy menu.
