photo of clouds

Hey RA!

I took this photo last night of the spectacular clouds over Canberra.

I only had my iPhone, which didn’t cope well with the available light; but I was hoping if this got posted, others who got better shots might post them.

This formation lasted less than ten minutes and is seen over the Nicholls sports precinct.

Wikipedia gives a succinct definition: Mammatus (WMO term mamma) – breast cloud – round pouches on under-surface of cloud.

yep – that goes a long way to explain why I found them so captivating…

Great shot too, MisB! Wish I’d had my DSLR on me…

Maybe it’s true what they say? Gunners is like living in the land of Mordor! 😉

I saw ones like that last Friday, What are they called?

As the man said – boobies! 😀

They’re called “mammatus” (i.e. boobie) clouds.

Yay for BOOBIES!

OK the photo has now appeared… and wow! My (limited) meteorological knowledge tells me that these are mammatus clouds, Wikipedia gives a succinct definition: Mammatus (WMO term mamma) – breast cloud – round pouches on under-surface of cloud.
Associated with large temperature changes etc. Nice shot!

No that the photo is there, I can confirm that I saw something similar last Friday when that really cold and icy change rolled in. I did take a pic with my iPhone – in the car whilst stopped at lights – I know illegal – and whilst I can see what I am looking for, I didn’t think it would come across really great on here. And your one is so much better – looks like some awful thing is about to appear from them. I wonder what that weird sort of ‘ball’ formation is all about?

Breathtakin. I have never not seen anything quite like it.

oh you’re all so clever!

Definitely the most amazing I’ve ever seen too. Sorta belnds into the story as though it wasn’t here. Heck, if the text didn’t call me a liar, I’d say the photo isn’t there at all!

Great pic! That’s certainly a strange looking cloud! Most amazing thing I’ve ever seen!
