I believe it’s called the ‘Bystander Effect’ and I’m guessing no one intervened. It’s rare someone breaks the mold.

where’s batman when you need him? (or tim the yowie man…)

I still hold onto the hope that if I am attacked in a public place at a busy time, someone will hopefully try to assist and not just avert their eyes and keep on walking.

I was once beaten in Civic at a commutable time. (6:35 pm)

Out of th 50+ people that were witnesses, one intervened and stopped the attack.

Don’t rely on hope, many people do not want to get involved.

All this talk of people being attacked and people just turning the other way.

Is this what even happened?? I haven’t seen any reports to say that it did…

New York have the ‘Guardian Angels’ and apparently a chapter was formed in Canberra,in 2008,but has yet to begin patrolling. With the silly season coming up it’s time to come out of the woodwork,Katy’s Angels!

It depends on who was geting beaten up. If it was someone who seemed like a random member of the public being beaten then i would intervene. if was just some of the trash that haunts civic bludging money having a fight amoung themselves then i would leave it alone.
As soon as I read that it was a man and a woman beating on someone I immediately thought of that

Yep. Start intervening amongst that mob and they’re likely to all turn on you, much like if you intervene in a domestic.

Intervene in a full-on domestic and you will soon become a convenient target for the rage.

Exactly.

You would think that at 1630 on Friday in Civic interchange there should be lots of witnesses. and CCTV footage. Lets hope anyway.

Plus intervention from the crowded onlookers? Wtf? If you see a man and a woman beating down a women, intervene.
Anyone who witnessed but did not intervene, you are a grade A POS

If they’re the regular civic junkie crowd, I’d be reluctant to intervene unless it really looked like it was serious (ie: if they’re yelling and flailing at each other, nope. If they’re laying into someone curled up on the ground – yes).
I’d rather not run the risk of having all three turn on me for ‘interfering when nothing was happening’.

You would think that we were all present and can make a range of knee-jerk judgements.

As soon as I read that it was a man and a woman beating on someone I immediately thought of that couple that seem to be permanently stationed outside Maccas asking everyone for change ( which the bloke takes straight to the TAB btw)

You would think that at the time you mentioned, there would have been a lot of people around to help, maybe grab the guy and stop him…. but no – walk past Canberra, walk past.
