Lisa Ridgley has popped up to let the world know that the Dinner en Blanc pop-up picnic is coming to Canberra for Enlighten.

Diner en Blanc, the pop-up picnic phenomenon that has been embraced by cities around the world, is coming to Canberra this March as part of Enlighten. Canberra will host its first Diner en Blanc on Saturday 2 March at a secret location, which will be revealed to dinner guests at the very last minute.

“Diner en Blanc is about food, fun, fashion and basically people having a great time together so we’re very excited to have it as part ofthis year’s Enlighten,” said Enlighten Marketing and Communications Manager Adelina La Vita.

“This is the first time Canberra will host this event and it promises to take the pop-up concept to a refined level, taking place in an unforgettable location. It’s a perfect fit with Enlighten, which aims to capture the cultural essence of Canberra through innovative, creative and surprising experiences at iconic locations.”

Ms La Vita said the experience will provide some twists and unexpected turns, such as guests not knowing where the dinner is held until shortly before the event. “You will need to bring your own table, table setting, chair and your own version of a smart picnic. Only white is allowed – no black or hints of colour. All guests must dress in elegant white.”

If you think this floats your boat there’s a Canberra page for registration.

UPDATE 06/01/13 09:16: Ms Ridgley has been in touch to note that her involvement is limited to publicity for the event.

Is it just me who is hoping for a torrential downpour on hundreds of people only allowed to wear all white?

No. 🙂

” – Once confirmed, the presence of each guest thus becomes essential and mandatory, whatever happens and regardless of weather conditions; – Colour: white only; – “

Is it just me who is hoping for a torrential downpour on hundreds of people only allowed to wear all white?

So rare to find an event these days where wearing black is making a statement.

I almost wanna rock up in purple parachute pants with a fistfuls of hotdogs, just to help keep it classy but I don’t know if I could handle the the knobbiness.

That’s the word I was looking for.

So around a month after the Multicultural Festival, Canberra will host a dinner which is an all-white affair?

The only thing missing is pointy masks…..

Paris one night, Charnwood the next. Now that would be a real surprise. Is the chicken shop still open?

Lol.Beer came out my nose.
Is it “bring your own cutlery” as well?

Scissors should do fine.

Unless it’s some laboured pun I haven’t grasped, ‘enlighten’ is misspelled in the headline.

‘ang on! According to an account of the Philadelphia DEB, you bring your own food but still pay 50 smackeroonis to set up your own table! What the! How are these folk going to be allowed by the ACT Government to prevent Canberrans from simply picknicking of their own volition at the same site, without paying fifty bucks? Ridiculous. It’s not as if you’re getting live music for the price!
FAIL!

Lisa Ridgley? Of Mix 106 commercial radio? How unpromising.

The “furnished materials” make no mention of the price of this “cart your own table and chairs, cart out your own trash” occasion, where everyone must leave in the same moment. Anything but exclusive, anything but interesting, anything but classy. Oh, and ANYTHING but Canberra essence in culture & vibe.

It’s going to be banal.

Ah, learn something new each day!

Ok, a quick look into my glass ball, or google, finds;

Pop Up Picnic have reinvented picnics! Just choose your picnic style from the list of culinary delights and they will work their magic, taking care of everything from the picnic nosh, to helping you find the perfect location. They can even surprise you with some of their eccentric picnic entertainment ideas.

So a “pop-up picnic”, is a picnic with caterers. Which sort of spoils the notion of “picnic” somewhat.

pic·nic

noun
1. an excursion or outing in which the participants carry food with them and share a meal in the open air.
2. the food eaten on such an excursion.

Ok, I’ll bite; pop-up picnic?
