Diplomats reject O'Malley

The National Capital Authority have release the public record of their June meeting.

There’s some interesting juice in there (Kingston harbor not to have a slipway, Westridge House rezoned, more offices on Canberra Avenue, Zoo masterplan approved) but what caught our eye in the Eagle’s Nest was the hunt for more places to park foreign diplomats.

It seems the NCA’s land in O’Malley is unwanted by the diplomatic community and instead Yarralumla will be expanded.

The NCA does have some diplomatic land vacant in O’Malley, however, these sites have been rejected by a number of foreign missions on several occasions. The view of the diplomatic community appears to be that this land is generally unsuitable for their purposes.

As has almost anyone with taste – East O’Malley that is.

That huge joint at the entrance of the development is worthy of a certain recently deposed dictator.

Hahaha Al, between the owner of that house and Gaddaffi, I’d take the Libyan any day!

LOL – too true! There’s probably a tunnel beneath it leading all the way to Tripoli. Gaddaffi & sons, and all their bling, are on their way as we speak

Funny how some people have to fight tooth and nail to get a deck or extension or new house approved, yet conspicuous monstrosities like those on Tasteless Hill seem to go up with no oversight whatsoever

Agreed. I think it was built by the Greek woman who owns many suburban shopping centres.

Just shows that money cannot buy class, good taste or a sense of social responsibility.

But, by God, it can buy one helluva lot of ugly.

Diplomats got taste.

I still stand by my comment that most are hopeless drivers, however!

Hey, I will back that comment. Every afternoon I dodge them on Hindmarsh Drive as they come out of Yamba Drive and Palmer Street (behind the hospital) and then drive across three lanes of traffic with no indicator to get into O’Malley.

Considering they all seem to live in O’Malley, why not take an embassy site there.

There are already several there, though I would put them at the TPLAC end of the scale. I like to refer to it as the Embassy Ghetto.

Ohhh so not true. I love how everyone spouts this rubbish, working in the insurance industry I hear it all the time.

Diplomatic cars are required to be registered with the appropriate state or territory and must have CTP insurance at a minimum. http://www.dfat.gov.au/protocol/Protocol_Guidelines/07.html#77

thanks for the correction, qbngeek. First time I heard the story was from my driving instructor years ago, I just assumed he knew what he was talking about and thereby started my lifelong prejudice against DC plated cars.

I still stand by my comment that most are hopeless drivers, however!

Kingston “harbour”….that makes me chuckle

So the government builds a boat harbour at Kingston Foreshores for commercial boat activity and now the NCA says they can’t use the harbour for commercial boat activity because it will be too loud for nearby residents?

Canberra planning at its finest.

I can attest to this personally, having been run into by a blue-plated car earlier this year. This was exactly what the police told me when I enquired whether the usual rules applied.

And lets force them onto buses so we don’t have to put up with the often incompetent, uninsured Diplomatic Community plated cars. Surely as far as driver categories go, this lot is the worst. I always steer clear of blue plates because I know that even if they cause an accident, YOU (or your insurer) will have to pay up because they have full immunity even from traffic laws

Mmmm, I hope the blocks in the new section of Yarralumla will be getting smaller and small like in all the other new suburbs ’round Canberra.

How about we resettle the poor, hard-done by diplomats in Gungahlin? Or elsewhere in regular suburbia.

I don’t see why the NCA has to provide premium Yarralumla land for embassies or diplomatic residences of third-tier countries establishing a canberra presence. The land could be put to better use — what the area is really crying out for is another arboretum
