Direct flights to Singapore? Andrew's onto it

Andrew Barr has announced he’s off on a death march through Singapore and Jakarta:

Next month I will lead a trade mission to Singapore and Jakarta, during which the ACT Government will begin the formal push for direct international flights between Canberra and Singapore.

While in Singapore I will meet key aviation stakeholders to promote the benefits of international flights to Canberra.

Last year the ACT Government established the Aviation Taskforce, which comprises key members of the ACT region tourism industry’s peak bodies as well as those from the business, education and community sectors. It is providing a coordinated approach to aviation development in the capital region, which is home to 800,000 people.

Although New Zealand has been the short-term focus of attracting international flights to Canberra, I will be continuing work on developing aviation partnerships in key Asian markets.

Singapore is a focus in the medium term, and my meetings there next month are the first step in establishing a formal business case for this market.

Flights to Singapore, and so flights FROM Singapore also? That’d be the 2am jumbos Snow’s been dreaming of for some years, beating the Sydney curfew. I wonder who they’ll be flying over?

Probably wont be jumbo more like A330 type size or the newer 787 when it comes out.

I dont think there will be enough passengers to fill a Dragon Rapide let alone 300 for one of the big jets… And the flight path will be the same as it is now, over Jerrabomberra…

Couldn’t find the total number at that link

Total wasn’t. But I summed them to get 600,500 or so.

Couldn’t find the total number at that link, but my shire has another 4000 people since then. People living north east of Canberra probably wouldn’t come here to catch a flight, when Sydney airport is only 2 hours away and has public transport to it and cheaper parking. But those south and south east will, just like they come to shop, get medical treatment etc.

If Canberra Airport wants customers it needs to look at the price of parking, and integrating public transport into the Action network and at Action prices. $12 to Civic, where few people want to go anyway, is pretending to provide a public transport link – it’s not actually providing one. An Action loop through the Parliamentary Zone and into Civic would reduce the Taxi queues and would also be a really nice thing for arriving tourists – to be driven through the Parliamentary Zone on their way to their hotels.

Barr an expansionist perhaps. Map of region and ABS 2009 estimate of 600,000 population from 2006 data at http://bit.ly/14h4jef

Does the capital region extend to Campbelltown?
