Disgraceful Kambah Village clothing bins

I just returned from the Kambah Village shops where I found yet again, someone has prised open the charity clothing bins and strewn their contents over the carpark. My husband spoke to someone doing this a few weeks back, and the man used some choice expletives in response, as did his 5 year old son. Then the man took a swing at my husband.

I get that some people can be really down on their luck, but isn’t that what the charity bins are designed to assist? But not by raiding them and strewing their contents everywhere! What is wrong here?

I take all my donations directly to a charity; washed and ironed. I won’t leave them in a bin.

All the clothing bins are going to be relocated soon to a central place so that will mean only the one place will have clothing and other goods strewn around.

Don’t think that it is neccessarily people that are ‘down on their luck’ to pilfer from charity bins, a lot of it ends up at the markets for sale.

The charity shops in Mitchell have large signs saying no goods are to be left outside the shops after-hours but people ignore them and come Monday ,the staff have to spend time clearing rubbish away before they can get to the front door and open the shop.

Yes, I regularly see the one at Chisholm too and it is disgusting but then yesterday I also saw the bins at Kambah – atrocious. I can almost understand someone taking from them – if you have to resort to that you are obviously in need, but what I can’t understand is when people dump their household garbage at the bins. It costs the charities to remove it. You are actually TAKING money from charity.

This is a regular complaint about clothing bins, not just in Canberra. The only solution would be the one Woolies and Coles brought in to counter theft and vandalism from their outdoor trolley bays – move them inside the store. Have the clothing bins inside the op shops so that staff can see what is being donated. This will wipe out the problem of mattresses and other rubbish being dumped next to the outdoor bins.

Same thing has happened in Chisholm, clothes strewn all over the place on the northern side of the footbridge. Bored kid or lazy buggers I dont know but it makes these charity bins look bad thats for sure.

Pity, they are such a great service.

Nothing surprising about scumbags who either dump their useless c#$p or steal it from the bins. I wouldn’t be challenging the individuals because they’re scumbags, I would be taking photos/footage using my phone and noting car registrations before reporting to the police. The evidence should be enough to charge them with theft.
