Apologies for the lack of a photograph this week. I did take one but appear to have mislaid it. Or perhaps the dog et it?

Moving right along Hive-Minders what knowledge can you bring to the table about events worth going out to spend our hard earned discretionary dollars on?

Post away in the comments.

Et Voila! The image appears.

Superb, Granny. You just can’t make stuff like that up, hey?

I’ve heard it told as a joke many times since, but when I heard it told as a true story many years ago, I nearly coughed up a lung. Some ABC presenters from Melbourne (let’s give them names: The Coodabean Champions) were going to do an outside broadcast in rural Victoria — can’t remember where exactly, but it was on a lake. Anyhoo, they’ve gotten hopelessly lost and though they could see where they were meant to be from across the waterway, they couldn’t work out how to get there, but they had the presence of mind to stop and ask a local how to get to where they needed to be. After some moments of pondering their predicament, the local shook his head and grimly announced, ‘Nah, you can’t get there from here’.

*chuckle*

We had a similar experience many years ago in England when we were told to turn where the old mill used to be.

Ah, yeah, whatever (to quote my children). If people are looking for reliable information from whatever source (text or otherwise), then strike “pompousness” and re-insert “accuracy”.

Having circumnavigated this globe once or thrice times over (and you can call that statement “pompous” if you will) then I can tell you in spades that a little inaccuracy goes a long way. Sometimes into neighbouring towns, boroughs, provinces and districts.

Righteo…

Amazing how easily pompousness can come across in a text medium.

I’m guessing that most locals and returning out-of-towners would be looking for the bus that goes up the guts of Commonwealth Avenue and stops where the temporary traffic lights are, as have been, as was the case in the past.

Going out along Constitution Avenue and walking through the underpass is something that would not have occurred to me, though being young at heart and young in the head (and with kiddies that left the stroller/pram a long ago) I would have just as soon walked from town as jumped on a bus. But obviously there are many for whom transport to closer within striking distance is an issue.

el, no offence, but you might want to reacquaint yourself with local geography. ‘Adelaide Avenue’ starts on the south side of Parliament House. The phrase you were possibly looking for is, ‘Commonwealth Avenue’.

Thanks.

I’m betting interstate tourists are not finding these sneaky parks though, or 900 series buses.

Just across the road from Jamison House, so at the easternmost edge of CIT.

where is the underpass exactly – near the CIT?

Plenty of parking on Constitution Avenue, then duck through the underpass and a pleasant stroll through commonwealth park.

Typical ACT govt – spent a mint on planting flowers and on tv ads promoting the event, but don’t put on any busses to get people there.

Apart from all of the 900 series buses (north and southbound) making ‘special’ stops on Adelaide Avenue you mean?

Floriade is on, but apparently the carparks were jam packed at 9AM, so unless you fancy walking from Civic, give it a miss.

I’d previously mentioned the local kennels of the Hash House Harriers: http://the-riotact.com/?p=8673

Sunday morning run at 10am in Kambah. Details here: http://members.pcug.org.au/~terryg/chhh.html *

See first link for Australian HHH site with links to all the runs coming up this week.

* Unfortunately won’t get to it myself due to radio commitments.

Rotary Club Scenic Cycle tour of Canberra on this Sunday

Details here

You have a choice between a relatively easy Family Fun Tour that goes around the lake on bicycle paths (Tour #1, 22 km) or:

A longer Lake and Rural Challenge on cycle paths and bitumen roads. You can choose a suitable distance between:
Tour #2: Parliament House, 28 -46 km
Tour #3: Lake and Rural, 50-74 km
Tour #4: “Five Peaks”, 77-100 km

To add to the challenge, you can include one or up to five hills. All tours start and finish at Blundell’s Cottage, on the north shore of Lake Burley Griffin. Enjoy fruit and cakes for morning tea at two sites (provided by members of the Canberra-Woden Inner Wheel Club). A free BBQ sausage will be available for all entrants at the finish.

Canberra Capitals play tonight at the AIS training hall at 8pm v Sydney and then tomorrow at 7pm at Belconnen v Townsville.

Season starts in a few weeks so it’s a good chance to have a look at some of the new players and get behind the locals.

Now I can’t find the details but there’s some sort of gathering, I’m led to believe on Sunday at the Pot Belly in the afternoon or evening. It may or may not be a political fundraiser. I met one of the blokes playing last weekend, a singer/song-writer from Nowra-ish way by the name of Alan Blackshaw. He may have zipped past the radar except that he had a rather poignant song about the Canberra bushfires called ‘One Is Left’, a commentary on the fickle nature of the blaze to destroy one house, but leave the one next door.

Just checked and not only does he post his lyrics on his site but the chords as well: http://www.alanblackshaw.net/music_files/One%20is%20Left.pdf

Anyhoo, Pot Belly on Sunday…. sometime. If anyone knows more, please feel free to enhance the drivel above.

Overheard, I’ll keep an eye out for ya – I gunna see the Feldons on Tuesday 🙂

I can stab myself in the ears for free.

Good idea….

Thai Embassy food and culture thingamybob is on Sunday.

Dunno the details but starts mid-morning onwards. Lashings of Singha beer and Thai food … might be a good follow-up to the previous day’s beer fest.

I can stab myself in the ears for free.

whoops, an update.

The Feldons transit gig is not on.

Instead I think we’re at the Front…

Filthy’s will still be worth attending, Thumper? Tuesday’s my limit on free nights next week.

Thoroughbred Park has the races on – 19th September. Free entry.

That Feldons gig sounds like a good idea!
Will have to buy you a pint Thumper 🙂

Just on t’other side of the weekend: Trivia in the Trams at the Tra dies Club in Dickson on Monday night. Rego from 7pm, quiz kicks off at 7.30pm and it’s all over bar the shouting (I’ll have an Old, thanks) by about 9.15pm.

Last night of a six-week trial. I’m hoping not to get let off for time already served…

Free to enter. Cash and voucher prizes, games, a little ritual humiliation, and probably more cryptic, groan-inducing place name quizzes.

Friday: Damian Howard and the Ploughboys/Gentle Souls. Doors 6pm, music from 8pm. The Folkus Room, Mawson. http://thefolkus.org.au/Folkus_program1.html $15/$12.
*** I’ll have a couple of tickets to give away on Disc Drive, Artsound FM (92.7/90.3 Tuggers) at about 5pm (though that does clash with the Johnboy and Marianne Show on XX) and I’ll be talking to Chris Young, Ploughboys’ manager on air and playing a couple of tracks. ***

No Merry Muse tonight because everyone who can will be at The Turning Wave festival in Gundagai (lucky %^$#@% *&^%$#@#s).

Saturday: Afternoon jazz with As Famous As The Moon and the Yass High School Stage Band. The Folkus Room, Mawson, 2pm-5pm. Link above.

Sunday: Jenny M Thomas (Vic) and Rebecca Moore (currently South Coast). The Folkus Room, Mawson. Link above. $15/$12. Doors 6pm, music from 8pm.
*** I’ll be talking to Rebecca Moore and she’ll be playing a couple of numbers live on air on the Patchwork program on Artsound (92.7/90.3 Tuggers) between 10am and midday plus I’ll have some free tix for the evening show. ***

Qwerky, if you’re out there, you should post the details of the singing workshop with Rachel Hore this weekend — you never know who might be interested. You never got back to me with a Sunday price!

For me, I’ll be trying to get to that Open Source thing on Saturday morning and then wielding the mic at the reception of a lovely young couple who are tying the knot on Saturday afternoon.

Chase the Sun and Cass Egar at Old Canberra Inn on Friday night. Two great acts, well worth seeing.

And there’s still a lot of really great photographic exhibitions happening as part of the Vivid photography festival: http://www.nla.gov.au/vivid/exhibitions.html
