Prob a little late to be asking… But what festivities are on Monday for the Chinese New Year… ?

The National MTB Champs should be pretty good. Best bits are on tonight and Monday.

Tonight is the Mountain Cross or Four Cross, it’s essentially BMX on steroids, the course is great for spectators – big jumps, turns, obstacles etc. with 4 riders racing each other in a round-Robin style format. Fast paced racing, elbow-to-elbow, crashes-a-plenty, and a big crowd and great atmosphere.

If you like Cross Country, which is like road racing only on technical trails made of dirt and rock, Sunday has most of that action. It can be great to see how the story of that racing unfolds, as the top riders swap positions fiercely over the 4 hour-ish race.

Monday sees the DH (downhill) finals – those people are crazy. See what riders jumping over fire-roads and much bigger gaps looks like, along with doing 70+ km/hr over rocks most struggle to walk over. Easier to spectate than you’d think too, just wander up the hill (walking trails are there for spectators) and find a spot you like (Triple Treat, about mid-way up, often has the largest crowd and best atmosphere).

And, there’s also Trials on most of the time, which is those weird bikes without seats hopping over cars, pallets, oil drums, and other stuff not designed for bikes 🙂 Very cool to see.

For the ‘nerds’ out there – my husband is one, CANCON 2009 (Warhammer etc) is on Sat-Mon 9am-4pm at NATEX (I refuse to refer to it as ‘epic’).

If you can’t be bothered with the physical effort of offroad mountain biking then you might want to give the National Offroad Titles for 1/10 electric powered buggies a go.
Radio controlled mini monster trucks racing around a dirt course all weekend at the Canberra Off-road Model Car Club in Narrabundah.
Live video and timing results can be seen here, if its not rained out.

Going up to my mates place, having a few drinks and skating 80’s music.

Overheard is right about Friday Night 23rd January at the Street Theatre.

Circle of Rythm – renowned percussion trio Greg Sheehan, Bobby Singh and Ben Walsh appear at 8.30pm.

They’re supported by Favourite Son at 7pm. I don’t know a lot about them either but they’re lead by Mathew from Oka so it’s got my recommendation as Oka are a great band.

It’s part of The Street’s Exile on Childers Street program and will be held under the trees if it’s fine but will be exiled to Street One if it rains. Limited outside seating bring a cushion – if it rains 250 seats in the theatre.

Best of all it’s free thanks to the sponsors Alba and ANU exchange (not to mention ACT governement).

The Bandits at King O’Malley’s on Friday night (10 til 2, I think). A cover band, yes, but geez they’re good…

Friday night – Australia Gay @ Cube…

Oh, and if anyone’s up for a walk/run on the public holiday Monday, there are two Hash House Harriers runs (actually four in total on that day) but two to mention here are from the same spot: BBQs in Glebe Park, opposite Amaroo St/Coranderrk St, Reid.

7am Dawn Busting Hash Run — an annual institution
4pm Canberra Hash — BYO a couple of beers or whatever

Just turn up and make yourself known as a newbie/virgin.

Thursday: Mayhaps a tad late as it’s starting soon-ish: Domus Adultus (Home Grown) at the Hippo Bar, Civic from 8pm-midnight. AMAX, Owen Campbell, One Foot in the Gravy, Feline. $7/$5 CMC members.

Friday: Karismakatz live on Artsound FM 92.7/90.3FM from 8pm. Details for Facebookers on the Artsound page (and no doubt at http://www.artsound.com.au)

Friday: I don’t have all the details to hand but there’s a sensational group called ‘Circle of Rhythym’ playing at the Street Theatre Happy Hour thing from 7pm (I think) — check local guides. These guys are seriously good musicians. Appearing with Favourite Son who I know zip about.

Monday: Trivia in the Trams at the Tradies, Dickson from 7.15pm-ish to register for a 7.30pm start. Free to enter. Special round: 1980s music — that part will be rather daggy and untidy. But always lots of fun, and the crowds are up, now that some regulars are back from their Xmas/New Year break.

The Canberra leg of the Triathlon Challenge series over the whole weekend around the lake….including a Fun Run, Lake Swim, Kids Triathlon, Enticer Triathlon & Olympic Triathlon (that’s what I’m doing).

Australia Day Eclipse

Something to look for through the BBQ haze on Australia Day will be the Solar Eclipse (except for Tassie) that will be occuring . For Canberra its starting at 08:42, max eclipse at 08:58 and finishing at 09:13, but thats supposed to be universal time (an American version Zulu or Greenwich maybe?) so it should be starting at 19:42, max eclipse at 19:58 and finishing at 20:13.

A good chance to play a trick on the kids, “Hey Jimmy, watch Uncle Jack make the sun disappear”.

Cathy Petocz is launching her CD in the Commonwealth Park Amphitheatre which will be really cool to see it in use.

8pm Saturday. admission is free and there will be a bar and food.

Thumper- maybe, come check us out! 🙂 i’ll see if the boy wants to get rid of one.

more events and less chit chat please.

Young Liberal Federal Convention 🙂

So… Summernats part 2?

Except, the only tits you’ll see at a Young Liberal Convention are the Young Liberal members themselves……..

Don’t even ask about the smell of burning rubber!

And for those of us into noisy stuff……..

AIR FORCE SUPPORT TO AUSTRALIA DAY IN CANBERRA

The Royal Australian Air Force will conduct several flypasts over Canberra as part of Australia Day celebrations. Flying activities will involve F/A-18 Hornet fighters, PC-9s and the Air Force hot air balloon.

Sunday 25 January 8.10pm Four PC-9s from the Air Force Roulettes will conduct a flying display over Federation Mall (between Old and New Parliament Houses) as part of the Australian of the Year Awards.

Monday 26 January 10.30am. Four F/A-18 Hornet aircraft from No 77 Squadron, based at RAAF Williamtown will conduct a flypast over the flag raising ceremony at Regatta Point on Lake Burley Griffin. The jets will fly at an altitude of between 300 and 500 metres and at approximately 650 km/h. The formation will then head over the eastern basin of Lake Burley Griffin where the lead jet will conduct a vertical climb.

Monday 26 January From 8.10 pm The Air Force Balloon will conduct a static display beside the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin leading up to the start of the fireworks. The Balloon will then reposition to the Commonwealth Place Jetty to provide a burner display during the fireworks that commence at 9.00pm.

Young Liberal Federal Convention 🙂

So… Summernats part 2?

Itchy Triggers deliver their salute to Oz pub rock at Federation Tavern, Gold Creek, Sunday night from 7pm.

Young Liberal Federal Convention 🙂

Awesome community/collective garage sale across the road from the Gorman House markets – Saturday 10 am til 2pm.

I’m selling mostly ladies clothing, public service wear, unique items, one of kind form a fashion label, and brand/band t-shirts, and ! -very very cheap- but there will be plenty of other bits and bobs from heaps of other sellers – if youre after something in particular – just ask!

Not on if its raining. 🙂

Wish I could go Thumper, haven’t seen The Feldons in a little while.

This weekend, the Nationals for the Australian Battle Group are happening in Canberra.
To see what the Aust Battle Group do, visit http://www.ausbg.org – it’s radio controlled ships with cannons shooting ball bearings – trust me, it’s pretty frakken cool.
The battles take place about 10am & 1pm, Saturday & Sunday. Bring snacks, folding chairs and plenty of sunscreen and a big hat.
They’re held at the Sporting Shooters, one of the firing ranges on Hector McIntosh Grove (that’s the small track that goes off Majura Rd, roughly back toward the back of Eaglehawk near the ACT/NSW border)

There’s also a gamer’s convention all weekend at EPIC – Cancon. I not sure of where one can get details, but if you go to Epic this weekend, and see geek-types wandering around, follow them and I’m sure you’ll work it out.

I’ll tell you what’s on this weekend…

A RAIDERS GAME!!!

Rugby league fans among us don’t have to wait for the NRL season’s kickoff in March, there’s a trial match at Sieffert Oval this saturday! Details are

Canberra Raiders vs Cronulla Sharks
Sieffert Oval, Queanbeyan (entry off High St)
Saturday the 24th of January
The main game starts at 6pm

Entry is kinda free (gold coin donation to some cancer-related charity)

Note: It seems to be the only trial match we’ll see in the Canberra/Queanbeyan area before March, so if you’re interested DON’T MISS IT!
