And so once more we charge headlong into the weekend in this, the entertaining capital of the nation.

But what should we be doing? Where should we be going?

If you have the answers drop them into the comments box below.

People we’re trying to make a useful listing here.

If you have no events to add I’ll ask you to pipe down in future.

Thanks.

What a huge weekend I have. Grubbing up serrated tussock (using an adze, and a wrecking bar), and craftily re-planting with Phalaris and lime and fertilizer. Oh goody. Half of it will be in rain (hopefully). My hat has a hole so it will be just ultra fun. The glamorous life.

I’ve heard that the bladder and eyeballs are particularly good.

Swimming in Viagra is one thing, but swimming in scheming Nigerians I could probably live without.

Tied up, hey? Just remember: kinky is with a feather; perverted is with the whole chook.

Nah, it’s just a natural aversion to Google-able personal details. As mentioned elsewhere, I pay the price for having an email address on a performers’ directory. I am swimming in offers for Viagra and Nigerian scams.

Anyhoo, I can’t give these tickets away today. Noone took me up on the offer earlier, so if anyone else out there would like two freebies to the Merry Muse, Turner to see some extremely good musicians: Craig and Simone Dawson, Karen Lynne and band who are being joined tonight by National Folk Festival president John Taylor on double bass and (stop press) local fiddle legend Donal Baylor, call me now. I turn into a pumpkin at about 6.30pm and they’ll be getting into their sound checks and what have you.

Going, going, going…

It comes from living with offal …

*hehe*

… I’m more concerned about Danman being literally tied up tonight, but each to their own. I must say I would have expected him to be happier about it all, though.

Overheard: it’s great that Canberra can support two folk clubs – but why on the *same night*?

That, my friend, is a very long story. And since I came in well after the beginning of the start of the beginning of the end, and I have patchy knowledge of the middle bits, AND only know bits and pieces of the end-game: ‘no comment’!

But really, folk is such a many splendoured thing that on one night you might have two totally different sub-genres represented across town. One night Bill might be absolutely packed to the rafters at Mawson while the crickets are making more noise at Turner, and vice versa.

Tomorrow at Mawson, you’ve got a young singer-songwriter with a support act of a bunch of crusty old yet genre-hopping traditionalists playing rusted on folk, blues and a bit of rock and roll, while the Turner option has a mob of absolutely kick-ar$e bluegrass musos supported by two of God’s gifts to trad and contemporary music and just plain bl00dy nice people.

(Actually, Craig and I had an innocuous little incident at the Illawarra Folk Festival earlier this year which involved a mad dash from one venue to the main venue in the teeming rain because (as Craig quite astutely put it) ‘The beer’s in the main pavilion!’ and it ended up spawning two songs! They may do one or both tomorrow night.)

But further than that, Ggreg, you’ll probably find that there are other venues doing similar-ish things on Fridays too. Blues night at the Old Canberra Inn, for example, and maybe even something similar at the Phoenix. I have a radio colleague who believes rather than Canberra having “nothing to do” as is often the criticism levelled, it’s more a case of too much going on, as some venues struggle to draw a crowd. I know for a fact it’s a malady the Folkus and the Muse struggle with some nights.

And then on other nights, they’re putting up the ‘house full’ signs. On topic, put this one in your diairies now, if you’d like to take a recommendation: ‘women in docs’ at the Muse, Friday 10 October. http://www.womenindocs.com/ — link to myspace from there for tracks. That will be a sell-out. Conversely, the Folkus will be standing room only on Saturday 13 September when Frencham/Smith are on.

It all balances out! I love MC-ing once every cracker day at the Muse and I’ll have a beer or three with big Bill A at the Folk Alliance in Sydney this weekend.

If the ute muster only takes a handful of idiot ute drivers out of town, then it’s a good thing. (I’m not saying all ute drivers are idiots, nor am I saying all idiots are ute drivers. Caveat: everyone is a good person. Warning: this post may offend some drivers. Especially idiot ute drivers.)

So if I used to drive a crew cab, did that make me a half-wit?!

Back on topic.

ANU OPEN DAY – Saturday – 30th August!

Open Day is the best time to come down and visit the uni for information in preparation for next year.

Residential College Tours – All the colleges will be offering guided tours – there will be show-bags, free food and lollies, music, etc. Most of the colleges will give you a free lunch too! Come along, keep an open mind, and just try and soak up the atmosphere.

Visit Union court for the ‘ANU open day’ show bag with information on faculty lectures & ANU tours throughout the day. Tours start at 9am, and lectures are generally earlier in the day, rather than later – so my advice would be to get there early.
