If you were to escape the roaring of Summernats this weekend (but not go down to the coast), what would you be doing?

From Jazz at the botanic to a movie at Screensound.

sounds good simto.

Is the market at Old Parliament House open this weekend?

Having said all that, I’ll be at the bachannalia. Can JB do a poem for us this time? Please?

Screensound’s doing an outdoor screening this weekend, of Billy Wilder’s “The Apartment” (with Jack Lemmon, Shirley McClaine and Fred McMurray in a bittersweet love triange) – 8:30pm, costs $8, in the courtyard at Screensound. They’re doing these until at least the 3rd of Feburary – upcoming screenings include “Seven Swords”, Tsui Hark’s wuxia reworking of “Seven Samurai”, and Robert Altman’s “Short Cuts”.

Yes folks, the Backanalia returns this Saturday, same place, same time (doors open at 6.30pm), same cost (a measly $5) and same beer and sausages (vegetarian fare may also eventuate). You are still free to bring your own food, drink and whatever, and you are encouraged to bring a blanket, a song, a poem, a joke or any other short act to do between musical acts.

Some things are different however. Early birds will be entertained by Slim Pickens, Round John Virgin and the Strange Bedfellows playing their legendary ‘Same Old Crap’. There’s new lighting effects (another string of chrissy lights) and seating and possibly (if we get it together today and tomorrow) some wonderful new festive decorations.

The full line-up for this month’s BB is as follows:

Slim Pickens and Round John Virgin: 7-8.15
Alison Procter and Dan from The Cashews: 8.20-8.50
Smitten: 9-9.30
Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens: 9.35-10.05
Quagmire: 10.10-10.40
Ocean Moses: 10.45-11.20

What: Backyard Backanalia

When: 6.30pm, Sat 6th Jan
