Do Canberrans want to talk to the trees?

I recently read an article in which the city of Melbourne gave trees email addresses so citizens could report problems…

“The city of Melbourne assigned trees email addresses so citizens could report problems. Instead, people wrote thousands of love letters to their favorite trees.”…

…”Melbourne’s email-a-tree service is one in a litany of municipal projects aimed at leveraging personal and institutional technologies to keep cities running smoothly. In Chicago, there’s a text-based pothole tracker. In Honolulu, you can adopt a tsunami siren.

These sorts of initiatives encourage civic engagement and perhaps help with city maintenance, but they also enable people’s relationship with their city to play out at the micro level. Why have a favorite park when you can have a favorite park bench?”

How about Canberra trees get email addresses? What other “things” could we give email addresses so we can share concerns?

Cheers

Well don’t get too attached to those trees in the way of the train.

Milly, if you want to “email” about your footpaths etc then you can do pretty much exactly that right here: https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/app/forms/fixmystreet/

I haven’t used it myself but hear they’re pretty responsive.

Good to know. Thanks Grrrr 🙂

If only all objects that required government maintenance could have their own email addresses. I’d love to email the uneven footpaths on Lonsdale Street, the abandoned burnt out car around the corner from my house, or the unkempt median strips in lots of Canberra suburbs… Ha!

That aside, I have a few favourite trees I wouldn’t mind emailing. Just because I appreciate them.
