Do interstate driving offences also reduce points on your ACT licence?

I was in Victoria last month and managed to not see the lower speed signs around a level crossing on a country road.

I was clocked doing 100km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

I was wondering if the road authorities are organised enough for me to lose points on my ACT drivers licence as a result.

I guess the answer is yes, but just wondering…………..

Much like every other person in the territory, I have also moved from interstate so this topic has interested me in my first few months here. I had 6 demerit points on my NSW license when I moved here, but had 0 points when I converted to an ACT license. The reason for this is that point systems are different between states.

A 3 point offence in NSW may be 2 points in the ACT, or better yet (for us), a demerit offence in NSW may not attract any points in the ACT. I have done some comparisons between NSW and ACT systems and found NSW to have significantly more demerit point offences than we do. I think the rule is we get demerits for only those offences ACT equivalents.

AFAIK we have the least number of demerit point offences in Australia… yay…?

It’s actually quite easy to miss unless you’re looking for it.

I travel that way quite regularly. It’s quite easy to miss the signs, despite what the photo shows.

In regards to the points, it was changed late last year so that all systems (various states) were able to proccess infringments to interstate. I’m guessing it’s not flawless yet though.

~10 years ago, I asked the same question at the gov shopfront. They said no, they never seem to send the offences over especially for minor 1 point infringements. That said it obviously has happened to some people and probably more so now than it used to be.

You’re information is a little out of date. Everything that appears in the National Schedule of Demerit Points will be transferred to your ACT licence.

Yes was meant to, doesn’t mean it actually happens/happened. I know someone who should have lost their license but the 3 points never came over onto their license. That was about 5 years ago. They should be better now, but i’m not so sure….

Yes Dork

The one at Bagshot. It must have quite a reputation.

The one at Bagshot? I know so many people that have been caught there. Get’s so many people.

I feel obliged to inform you that demerit points are actually added to your licence, not taken off (despite what the policeman on the telly says).

Phew, that’s better.

I knew someone had to say it 🙂

The tension was killing me.

I believe the systems are now working properly, so the points should come from your licence. You could get lucky though. I remember a story in the last week of an ACT speeder in NSW getting nabbed for speeding with a suspended ACT licence.

In most other states you can check your demerit points online, but the ACT is still living in the 1920s with their rego system so you need to go through a complicated process to check.

In my experience the answer is generally “no” but there are occasional exceptions. I’ve had a few low-range speeding tickets on NSW highways, and only one has ever affected my demerit point allowance.

It depends where you do it. If you get caught in NSW then they “must” inform the ACT, in Victoria they “may” tell the ACT.

Yes they do.

This has been covered here before.
