Do not enter bus through this window

bus window sticker

I’ve been seeing signs on bus drivers’ windows for a long time now and I’ve always wondered what their purpose was.

Have ACTION had a problem with passengers trying to get onto the bus through the driver’s window? Do drivers prefer to get in and out through their window?

If anyone knows that answer to this mystery, it’ll be a RAer!

Back on topic, seriously how any drivers would leave the bus without putting on the handbrake? It’s not like I ever forget to put the handbrake on in my car, and I don’t have a warning stating that I should.

Answer – hardly any, but it could happen if the driver is distracted or happens to be sitting in the bus for a lengthy period with the doors open before exiting the bus.

Effectively the hand brake IS automatically on when the doors are opened. The problem is that unless the over ride handbrake is also applied the bus can roll away if the doors are closed through the window.

No the short stop brake is automatically on when the doors are opened (except on the type of bus pictured in the OP which is why you can sometimes see them being driven with the front door open). The short stop button/lever locks the footbrakes on. It can’t be relied on to keep the bus stationary because it requires air pressure to keep it on so if the engine is switched off the air pressure will get too low to hold the brake on. The handbrake on the other hand requires air pressure to be released.

If the driver opens the doors and then exits the bus without activating the handbrake, and then closes the doors by pressing the button through the drivers window, the automatic brake will be deactivate resulting in a runaway bus.

This is only half-true. It is a generic sign which is bought by many bus operators throughout the country.

It is not actually possible for the above scenario to occur on any ACTION bus – the door circuit is wired so that the doors cannot be closed unless the park brake is on or the driver’s foot is on the brake (this is also why some buses can take some time to depart from a bus stop).

Entirely in keeping with the proliferation of signs warning against doing things that anyone with an ounce (maybe I should now say a gram) of common sense would realise were dangerous. A time of our times.

You ever been to California? There may as well be a sign saying “Warning, being alive is known to the state of California as being a cause of death”

YEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAWWWWWW

I generaly despise graffiti, but I’d love for someone to paint a confederate flag atop one of the old buses. The rest of the bus is mostly orange anyway!

Yes, there are customers who try to talk to/pay fares and abuse the drivers through this window… However, dare I say it but most of the idiots trying to do this probably can’t read anyway! Kind of defeats the purpose really.

Thanks VB. That makes sense. But isn’t it a bit like a sticker saying “do not use this chainsaw to remove your own head”? Would a driver, knowing the above, actually do it? Do they need a sticker to remind them?

That’s kinda what I was thinking. Maybe a sticker which says “put the brakes on in your ten ton vehicle before leaving it”?

I asked this very question on the ACTBus bus 670 tour a few week ago and was told it was to stop drivers reaching in through the window to open doors etc. Nothing to do with people climbng in and out of the window.

This message is meant for the driver. On some buses the brake is automatically activated when the front doors are opened and on all buses the brake is activated when the rear doors are opened.

If the driver opens the doors and then exits the bus without activating the handbrake, and then closes the doors by pressing the button through the drivers window, the automatic brake will be deactivate resulting in a runaway bus.

The sign means access in terms of reaching through the window, not actually entering through the window.

I can’t stop laughing at the last one, mental image and all that. Clearly, the cyclist did not read the sign.

Interesting design feature!

I once saw a furious cyclist pulled up next to a bus at the lights. The cyclist was trying to access the driver’s throat through the open window and an entertaining grappling match ensued. Perhaps the sticker is also for such incidents? 🙂

Seen it on buses overseas as well.
