Do you care that the ACT Government didn't give for the royal wedding? [With poll]

The Canberra Times is delighted to have finally found a local angle on the royal wedding.

The ACT Government has not sent a gift, or in this case made a donation to charity which was the couple’s clever way of not getting deluged with crap from every corner of the world.

RiotACT has long thought that Government’s making donations to charity on our behalf is pointless and insulting tokenism. So despite going to a wedding party and revelling in Beckham arseing up the wearing of his OBE (medal on the wrong side when he should have been wearing a neck ornament, or better yet realise that at a royal wedding an OBE is no a particularly prestigious gong) we salute this bold stand.

If I want to give the couple a token wedding gift by donating to the flying doctors I’m more than capable of doing it myself.

We can only hope this bold stand will now be consistently held when the event in question is more to the Chief Minister’s tastes.

Question for republicans…. (and others)

If we are to become a republic, who should we have on the heads sign of our coins?

How about Carl Stefanovic? Apparently he’s a good actor. Or at least someone seems to like him, since s/he sent all those votes in to the Logies…

And the dog.

In america they go with historical presidents. So menzies on a 50, curtin on a $1, etc etc

But this is Australia. Should be Bradman on the dollar, Pharlap on the 50, and Brock on the 20!

I’ll support a republic when people stop wanting to call the head of state a president. To much history of dodgy rulers with that name. I vote we keep calling the person Governor General, and simply do away with the fiction that the Queen in the next step above in power.

The Queen actually paid for the event and as for the £20m on security, It bought in over $500m in tourism.

Yes, bless her cotton socks – saving up all her spare pennies, selling home made cakes, pulling an extra cleaning shift or two…

Could it be Julia? Mr Stanhope? or maybe the 3 indys who control the government.
Or even better, Eddie McGuire.

Some have suggested remain the queen, but that seems silly if she is no longer our head of state

The donation by the Commonwealth Government is very appropriate and should be on behalf of all Australians, the donations by States and Territories is tolkenism at it’s best, particularly $1000 from Qld when NSW and Vic managed larger donations. We are the one country and the UK doesn’t care about our local political arrangements.

Agree 100%

Despite being a republican, I still think it’s appropriate for the Australian government to send a gift, but it just looks like double-dipping for the states to offer a gift as well. Were the premiers and chief ministers invited? I think no, therefore, no gift. Simple.

Yet another reason to abolish the states. They’re all bloody expensive wastes of time and money (just like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, coincidentally), and I hope that those who did make donations to charity gave the money to flood recovery…

I hate to think how much was spent by all concerned (not just governments) for this event !

The Royals have never been so liked as they are now and I think it was a wonderful day that many young and old alike can share in for years to come.
Beats hearing about all the depression etc in the world.

I would be much happier if the British Government had donated the total cost of that appalling circus to charity and those two spongers eloped to Fiji like everyone else.

Not possible. They aren’t bogans.

Yep, I care deeply. I shed a tear of pride when I heard.

It’s bloody amazing how we still seem to snivel to all things british.

I got cheesed off with them in the 1940s when I was required to cough up threepence (my weekly pocket money!) for the restoration of St Pauls cathedral in London Town.

Then Sir Winston went and carked it and we were required to cough up again, but turned out fine as it established the Churchill scholarships which are still going I believe.

And how about them pulling the plug on the Chasers. Who do they think they are, Americans?

We’ve got lots of public art we could have sent as a present. If it’s good enough for us, it’s good enough for them.

How we get some charity in the form of a tax cut?

One day Australia will grow up and move out of home. Hopefully.
