Have you ever watched talent shows and thought ‘that could be me’? Well now is your chance!

South.Point shopping centre has started the search to find the next local star by hosting their third Rising Star talent competition, giving up-and-coming Canberra singers and dancers the chance to showcase their talents on a public stage.

Last year, local teenager Lucy Sugerman captured hearts across the country when she appeared on The Voice stage but before she become a finalist on the popular TV series, she began her star-studded journey by winning the inaugural Rising Star competition.

South.Point marketing manager Amy Foster believes the local talent competition was her stepping stone to greatness.

“Our 2016 winner, Lucy, was able to gain so much experience performing to the public during Rising Star before she tried out for The Voice,” Ms Foster said.

“She is living proof of how valuable this experience is to a young performer’s career. Our aim is to give young talent an opportunity to build their confidence as performers and get feedback and advice that will help them further their careers.”

To have your chance to perform in front of a live crowd, meet some celebrities and win a $1,000 South.Point gift card, send your singing or dancing audition tape to risingstar@southpointcanberra.com.au by Friday 24 August.

The top six artists will be selected from each category and will have their performance judged by an all-star panel including singer, songwriter and actress Samantha Jade, The Voice finalist Amber Nicholls, hip-hop dancer Will Tran, and 2017 Rising Star winner Sophie Edwards.

The live competition will take place on Saturday 1 September from 11 am – 2 pm in South.Point’s centre court.

Since winning the seniors’ category last year, Sophie Edwards has been able to explore opportunities in her music career that she never thought possible and now she returns as a judge of the talent competition.

“I’ve been working on my own music which has taken me all over Australia, going to workshops in Sydney and Melbourne, getting advice from really cool musicians,” Edwards said.

“I’m currently being mentored by KLP from Triple J, and have gotten to play live gigs, like Googfest at the beginning of the year.

“I am really excited to come back and hope I can help other homegrown talents get those same opportunities that I did. The competition brings such a good audience for your work, and the chance to meet a lot of other artists. It’s also a great public space where lots of people can see you do your thing.”

If you want to showcase your talent, apply to be in the Rising Star 2018 competition. And who knows, you could be the next Lucy Sugerman.
