Do you know unique or special individual (a Canberran) who would make a great documentary film?

I am a Canberra based filmmaker looking for a unique Canberran to make a short documentary film.

I’m looking for a person’s story that hasn’t been told in film.

The person can be someone following a dream or working in the arts, a sportsperson, a refugee, a firefighter – if you know anyone at all from Canberra’s diverse multicultural community who you think that their story should be told, I’d be very interested in hearing about them.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Please email Kris; kriskerehonaproduction(at)gmail.com

Thank you.

+1 for the soup kitchen lady. As old as the hills and still working to help people – wonderful lady.

I have to disagree – wonderful lady but not a unique story.

How about Ric and Josh from The Clubhouse? They’re supporting new, local Dj’s etc. When you speak to them they really show that they are passionate about the music and are trying to do something new in Canberra. You don’t have to be into dubstep and electro to find it interesting and their relationship with Krave (who they rent off) is hilarious. A great, weird duo who are funny and loveable.

First of all I’m another film-maker and would be glad to help out. More importantly, I’ve heard about a guy who has llamas who takes them into the hospitals and visits sick children etc, and that is his life. I would need to gather more information, but I’ve often seen him around the Griffith shops, just hanging out with their llamas! Contact me if you’d like more info…

That would be Nils and Linda Lantzke.
You may remember them as the domestic partners and transporters of Honeycomb the alpaca and a few other llamas.

There’s enough information around the internets to find locate & contact them fairly easily.

Is does he drive a little mazda 121, with the llama sticking its head out the back window? Or is that some other llama lover ’round Canberra?

Thank you to everyone’s suggestions

Does the person have to still be alive and if not, how long ago could they have died? More info on the type of doco, audience and what you want to achieve would be good. I know you have said that you want a Canberran but is the doco for Canberrans? Also, it sounds like you might want someone who would be inspirational to others rather than just famous.

My vote would go to a homeless person or who is on the verge of being destitute. I often wonder about their backgrounds and what they hope for their future. Someone who is not in that situation as a result of drugs or alcohol (although they might have turned to self medication) such as mental or physical health issues or a family breakdown might help address some common held beliefs. Although I don’t know her reasons, Limestone Lilly might even be viable since she is so well known.

Also, young people facing (or who have faced) life altering serious health issues such as strokes, cancers or who are or were on waiting lists for organ transplants. People I know and have known in this situation are very inspirational and humbling, their views and values of life and death often evolve.

another vote for Mully

David Eastman.

Thinking about this again, a person who will turn 100 in 2013 (Canberra’s 100th year) might be a good subject, but I don’t know how you would find them.

Now why didn’t you ask me 😉 ! Actually if you contact me on my email cuz, I have a couple of suggestions…actually, I’ll contact you…LOL!

I want to see Mully’s epic battle against the reptoids.

Seriously though, a doco on Mully, would be wonderful.

“The decline and fail of human evolution”, could be a working title.

Me. I’m ace!!

What about Limestone Lilly…an iconic Canberran

my vote is for my best friend and hero, daniel.

i will link him to this thread.

Other local oldies can tell interesting stories about when Campbell was the sticks and houses were cheap there and bread was delivered to houses daily in Griffith/Kingston and put in the little bread boxes outside the house (like little meter boxes).

I remember bread deliveries, it wasn’t that long ago. I remember the tip-top truck getting bogged in our driveway, too. That was when it used to rain, often.

That Gillespie bloke must have had an interesting background, to have become as twisted as he so clearly is.

That Gillespie bloke from the Department recommended increased security at Wentworth, armed officers on the roof, officers to be in pairs at all times, and all the gates to be locked.

Is this while you were inside?… wow… delusional…throw away the key!

The Soup Lady Stasia Dabrowski might be an interesting one, though perhaps not original given 7:30 did a profile about her back in 2006 or so.

The late David Branson and Canberra’s crazy grunge theatre/music scene of the 1980s/90s would be an excellent topic … (anyone still have footage of the labia piercings at the Terrace Bar? : 0)

This is actually a great idea. You could get a few people to re-enact some of the Splinter gigs, fireworks and all. You’d probably get and artsACT grant for that.

Many of the oldies at the Leslie Morshead old folks home in Lyneham have interesting stories to tell of the Burma Railway etc.

Other local oldies can tell interesting stories about when Campbell was the sticks and houses were cheap there and bread was delivered to houses daily in Griffith/Kingston and put in the little bread boxes outside the house (like little meter boxes).

The warts ‘n all tale of sex entrepreneur Fiona Patten would be an amazing subject! Provided the cameraman is happy to airbrush the pink bits!

Oh yeah! Fiona Patton of the Australian Sex Party. An amazing woman, doing more to fight for basic human rights in Australia than anyone else. She’d be brilliant.

John Hargraves (migrant who went on mediocre things)

The soundtrack could be the clink of empty grog bottles falling over, sort-of a never-ending soundtrack to his life.

A good doco would be one of the long-term vagrants that wander around Civic. It would be interesting to find out where they came from.

So many options:

* John Hargraves (migrant who went on mediocre things)
* Joel Monaghan (dog-fancier and rugby legend)
* Justin “Mully” Williams (evolutionary genetics experiment)
* John Griffiths (new media entrepreneur and future Chief Minister)

How about Zed Seselja: From Zed to Zed

What about the old Salvo’s dude or the soup kitchen lady?

Or perhaps you could follow Captain RAAF’s hunting expeditions.

I recommend Justin “Mully” Williams

You can call it: “Mully, the final years”.

How about … me? Along with at least 330,000 other people in ACT with good stories worth telling

I once joked that anyone’s life could be become the subject of ABC’s Australian Story, so long as it could be spun into the following formula: (1) sympathetic build up, with background story and interviews with family friends; (2) dramatic obstacle which causes protagonist’s life to spin out of control; (3) protagonist uses resilience/charisma/support family and friends to overcome obstacle, thereby inspiring others.

I was joking at the time, but there’s probably a great deal of truth in — everyone’s got a good, inspiring story, everyone’s got obstacles they’ve overcome (some of course a lot harsher than others)

If I were you, I’d seek out a recent refugee, possibly from Sudan or Somalia. Their experiences kinda put some of our regular complaints here on Riot Act into perspective

You could try David Furner – he has a dream of being a great league coach
