seasonal firefighters

Territory and Municipal Services are putting out the call for seasonal firefighters.

“Ideally we are seeking applicants that have nationally accredited fire fighting qualifications, however if people possess a strong work ethic, work well in a team environment and are keen to learn new skills then I encourage them to apply.

“Seasonal fire fighters will receive extensive training in basic fire fighting, chainsaw operations, driving four-wheel drives, advanced first aid, working with chemicals for weed control and general on-the-job duties.

“They also have the opportunity to secure future employment as a fire fighter within the ACT Government. Eighty percent of last year’s seasonal fire fighters are still employed with TAMS.

Probably the best way to break into the closed shop of firefighting.

If you’re interested get along to the Stromlo Depot on Cotter Rd at 5.30 pm, Wednesday 6 June. RSVP to Scott Farquhar via email on scott.farquhar@act.gov.au .

Depends what you mean by that. Pretty big cultural difference between the urban guys and bushfire services of one sort or another. Not a bad gig though (several of my friends have do it at one stage or another). At least one went on into a full time senior position with ACT emergency people (or whatever they are called).

Basically, doing this job, you spend a most of time working on a regular tree trimming/lopping crew for tams, but you have a fire truck with you and respond to anything that starts (very quickly, since you are ready to go at a moments notice). They get lots of experience fighting running grass fires, which is always fun.
