Dobinson’s Canberra has announced it will close its Bunda St store on Sunday (31 January) after more than two decades serving the community, but the business will still have plenty of other outlets across the city where you can grab a tasty pie or pastry.

“After 21 years of your loyal patronage at the first Dobinson’s store on Bunda St, and eight years as Baker Bills in the City Market, we’d like to thank you, Canberra for all your support in keeping our family business alive,” Dobinson’s Canberra wrote on its social media page.

“It’s the community that has kept us going all these years.”

On social media, users lamented the loss of the Bunda St store, also stating they were glad the business’s other shops remained open.

“This is devastating,” one wrote.

“Sad to see you go. Been going there since my boys were little, almost 20 years ago when they used to share a sausage roll and a milkshake while I had a coffee. A real institution! Will miss you guys, all the best Sue and the team,” another said.

“When I worked in the city I loved your shop, I am so glad you are at Woden now,” a third wrote.

On its website, Dobinson’s attributed its success in Canberra to five generations of pastry chefs who all contributed to the family legacy of producing the finest quality and delicious pastries, starting in Northern NSW over 125 years ago with the first Dobinson’s bakery in Kyogle.

You can still find a Dobinson’s store in Westfield Belconnen, Westfield Woden, the Tuggeranong Hyperdome and there are plans to open a store in Gungahlin in the future.

I remember when I applied for a job as waitstaff for Dobinson’s Canberra Centre. They had me work a 4 hour shift as a trial – where they made me wash their dishes and only trialed my ability to take out coffees to tables twice in that 4 hours. They never called me again. They didn’t pay me. They didn’t even offer me a drink. It was unpaid labor and it was probably legal.

Not keen on Dobinsons sausage rolls, they’re way too salty.

Totally agree.

Weird to say the least that you would not include what most people would really like to kow Albert i.e. WHY????

Got to be more to this story then meets the eye. First the one inside, now this one as well. QIC wielding its landlord powers and making unreasonable demands again?

I suppose it’ll open up another spot for a bubble tea shop, or some overpriced chain store.

Why is it closing?

High rent? The mall outlets are much smaller spaces. Just a guess.

They are smaller and would be cheaper and would make more money per m2 compared to the store in the Canberra centre which also had a table service area.

I would say it is a combination of rent in Canberra centre plus a desire to expand the smaller format stores as well as supplying supermarkets like Supa Barn (Casey and think Kingston) which also stock Dobinsons pastries and Pies etc.
