Does anyone have an 8mm film projector

Hi,

My wife and I have come across some 8mm films of her family. We don’t really know what is on them and don’t want to go to the expense of having them converted if they are rubbish.

Does anyone have an 8mm projector that we can use or hire to see what is on the films? Am happy to pay reasonable costs?

Thanks

Mark

Roxypork,
We have an interesting problem. Since neither of us are willing
to reveal our identities or e-mail addresses we must find a trusted
intermediary who can introduce us. I know that the-riotact.com
knows our e-mail addresses. Perhaps it would be willing to act
as the intermediary if you were to send them an appropriate donation?
Can someone on RA suggest a better solution?

I am afraid that of the dozen meanings of ‘PM’ I can think of, none
are of any help when it comes to contacting you.

The specs of my projector are here:

Make a new email address?

Just make sure you know what kind of 8mm it is – Super 8 has little square sprocket holes, while Standard 8 has wider, rectangular ones. Super 8 projectors and transfer services are fairly easy to come by, Standard 8 projectors are less common, and if you want a decent transfer the only place I know of is Video-8 in Sydney who have a special Standard 8 gate for their Rank MkIII telecine.

If it’s a Canberra family – offer the footage to the ACT Heritage LIbrary.

Otherwise, give the NFSA the opportunity to view it – ordinary home movies can be invaluable to a collection …

contact details via RA.

Do you know if it takes 8mm or super 8 tapes, or more likely both?

I can’t see how to pm you.

Can you PM me?

There is a couple on Ebay but an 8mm film editor may work for you as well

I would ring up the National Film and Sound Archive to see if they could let you use such equipment. (Probably one of their technicians would have to operate it.)

However, this sounds like a really bad short story where something unexpected will appear on the film, explaining why James looks more like handsome Uncle Max than Daddy. Just saying. (If I’ve freakily got a name right, please forgive.)

I don’t have one, but I did have 8mm film reels. I just pulled the reel out a few meters and held the strip up to a window. Got a good look at what was on them that way.
