… never tried it, and want to do so!

I don’t mean the “fake” caviar that is sold in supermarkets, I want to try the real thing, Russian or similar, from sturgeon eggs. I know it isn’t cheap 🙂

I can supply authentic music with my Balalaika! LP.
An LP with 12 tracks by “The Polyanka Russian Gypsy Orchestra with the singer Lonya”

This offer, kind though it is, I would find in more difficult to accept 😉

Good choice, Uncle Pervy on the cover would put anyone off listening to it…

If time is not as important as the product then thetruffleman.com.au has supplied me with a few ingredients over the years. $$$ though but if you’re in the market then I guess that is a secondary consideration

They appear to have some in stock. 30g tins for $176.

Despite the faux horror of some comments, I’d have to say that this is within the price range that I expected. I really do intend it to be a “once in a lifetime” thing, and to put it into perspective it is cheaper than most domestic air fares, cheaper than many nights out, and only the same price as three tanks of fuel for the white commodore. Yes it is definitely a luxury but not a crazy one for me.

Faux horror is good.

THAT’GOLD!!!!

No, that’s barely copper. Someone was a tad, um, gilled.

Re #18, surely a piano accordion is involved?

OP I believe there’s a Russian tradition of eating caviar out of a small dedicated mother-of-pearl bowl with a flattish mother-of-pearl spoon. I possess both items and as I will never eat caviar, let me know when you have acquired your caviar and I will gift you both items to ensure maximum authenticity and enjoyment!

Very kind offer which I feel duty bound to accept.
Happy to return them after use.

For those who didn’t know, AFAIK all of the beluga caviar available in Australia is from farmed fish, so no nett effect on the wild stocks of the fish.

And you can get all the accoutrements there too.

Make sure you spent at least that on the accompanying champagne too. 1996 Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill should do the trick 🙂

But of course! The Billecart-Salmon Cuvée Nicolas Francois will do me fine.

i was under the impression that the REAL caviar can not be imported now. In the 50’s / 60’s it was available. My folks were Russian and yes it wasFANTASTIC. I think it is a protected spieces now. It takes a long time for the fish to grow to the size required to produce the roe [and be killed for the ROE]

You’ll probably find that boiled tapioca, salt and bit of salmon juice will reproduce the flavour for around 50c! : )

Given that the entire legal export from Russia is some three tonnes a year from this endangered species, you’ll be competing with all the oligarchs, the Chinese billionaires and various tinpot dictators for the harvest, and I doubt whether there is a single gram of genuine Russian beluga in Canberra. Maybe a high-class deli Melbourne or Sydney might procure some for you. But if you can find some, expect to pay at least $600-$800 for 100 grams.

Essential Ingredient, Jardine Street Kingston

The deli at Belco markets does have caviar, but I am not sure its the black Beluga variety..

Never bought it but I’d start by ringing around various delicatessens in town. There’s one in Belconnen markets has some less common imported produce so you could get lucky: http://www.belconnenmarkets.com.au/stores/delicatessens
