Has anyone been fined for not having your dog on a lead?

If so how much was it?

No idea. My dog takes a dump every time I take it for a walk. Never it picked it up. Ever.

I asked my dog what he thought about this and he said “do I give shit?”

The legislation says it gets “5 penalty units”. And “At the republication date, the value of a penalty
unit for an offence against this law is $110 for an individual and $550 for a corporation”. http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/a/2000-86/current/pdf/2000-86.pdf

But I’ve never even had a warning in Canberra, I think. I have at the beach a couple of times, but never a fine.

A penalty unit is the court imposed penalty, not the amount of an infringement notice.

All offences which can have infringement notices issued are found here, along with the infringement amount http://www.legislation.act.gov.au/sl/2005-29/default.asp

This comes under the category of “it has never happened because it is too hard”, just like no one has ever been fined for riding a bike across a pedestrian crossing or dumping rubbish at a charity bin.

my understanding from previous stories herein is that new police recruits do a one-time ‘blitz’ at pedestrian crossings and provide actual real payable fines to some of the lycra brigade and others who flaunt this regulation…

the op could simply call tams and make inquiries as to the penalty amount for this infriingement..?

No matter the technique your dog employs, the warm feeling of a turd wrapped in plastic sucks.

It’s better than the alternative.

Mayor Ratten has decreed the following:

All dog droppings in public places must be removed by the dog owner. It is an offence not to remove your dog’s droppings in a public place and not to carry appropriate equipment to pick up your dog’s droppings. An on-the-spot fine of $50.00 can be issued by authorising officers if you do not pick up and dispose of your dog’s droppings. An on-the-spot fine of $50.00 can also be issued if you are not carrying appropriate equipment to collect your dog’s droppings.

So, if my dog* carefully lays a large cable (but doesn’t dropping it, I am not required to pick it up? Or is dropping defined somewhere? Seems like an odd choice of word.

* – I don’t actually have a dog.

My Siberian Husky, a rather private animal when it comes to ablutions, tends to ‘lay cables’ rather carefully and quietly. My old Dane, on the other hand, preferred to drop land-mines from a great height with no finesse whatsoever. B-52 style.

No matter the technique your dog employs, the warm feeling of a turd wrapped in plastic sucks. Even on a frosty July morning.

I will tell you whats worse. Warm turd between your foot and thongs in summer.

You forgot to mention poo search and rescue. When you cannot find the freshly deposited souvenir when you get to the spot where you last saw your dog in squat position and you end up walking back and forth along an imaginary grid to do your civil duty. I have had to give up a few times. Reluctantly.

What bothers me more than people ignoring the leash laws is those that think it’s ok to have their dogs off leash in areas where it is allowed but have no control over them whatsoever. Which is also against the rules, but also never gets enforced.

Bring in dog owner licensing already…

I don’t own a dog, but I carry a cheap dog leash in my bag when I’m exploring the parks and paths of Canberra. I often encounter owners letting their dogs wander freely in areas where they are not permitted to do so. $5 for the lead is worth it for the look on an owner’s face as I walk their dog back to them.

I initially thought you were a fruitloop, but thinking on this now is actually a pretty good idea. Even in an offleash area, owners are still expected to have control over their dogs. If you have enough time to put a lead on and look for the owner, I’d suggest the owner has no control.

Good on you, I say. Keeps the animals safe.

Hope you are charged with attempted theft of a woofer.

I’d love to see the look on your face…

You do realise a great deal of Canberra is designated as an off-the-lead area? But I suspect that you probably have the TAMS maps in that weird bag of yours.

I’m not sure how returning property directly to the owner constitutes theft.

Dogs often approach me while I’m on shared paths. The owner may be quite a distance away and unaware that their dog has wandered off to follow pedestrians or cyclists around. I secure the dogs and return them to their owners. Sometimes this takes a bit of asking around and searching.

I’m not sure why you feel what I’m doing is a bad thing. I may enjoy seeing the faces of the owners when I walk their dogs back to them, but the point of the exercise is to keep unattended dogs off the roads and paths. I’ve seen a cyclist collide with a wandering dog. I don’t want to see that again.

Ironic that the appropriate equipment is the evil plastic bag.

So if my dog takes a dump behind the water meter of a random property on our regular walk, it is not an offence because said dump was taken on private land and not in a public place? I like this new Mayor now.

+1 YES!!!!

You must be super fun at parties

horse pooh is jus recycled grass. After 3 mins it doesn’t stink anyway.

Why don’t horse riders have to pick up their horse’s massive piles of cr@p from our footpath/cycleways? A doggie doo is nothing compared to these large trails of manure, but there is no legislation saying they have to clean it up? That’s a bit unfair to dog owners and a disgusting sight for anyone else using these facilities.

Horse manure’s great for the garden, I’d love for there to be massive piles of it near me, I’d be out there with bags or a wheelbarrow. Beats driving out to get it or paying for it to be delivered.

Does anyone get fined for not picking up their dog poo? I’ve never been questioned as to whether I’m carrying appropriate equipment.

dph @ #3 & 5 – If you’re that frightened of getting poo on your hands, I’m surprised you don’t pay someone $50 to wipe your own backside. Don’t worry though, maybe one day you’ll get fined or better, RA will start a Tuesday dog poo post with pix of dog owners not picking up dog crap.

wildturkeycanoe @ #6 – I’m guessing that, based on diet, horse poo breaks down faster than dog poo and doesn’t have the same toxins. Good point though but, be careful, you might start a cyclist/pedestrian crossing type debate by demanding riders must dismount every time their horse takes a dump.

Not to mention the fact that it’s just a pretty scummy thing to do generally….

Hope it all comes back in your letterbox/on your doorstop/on your car door handles one day.

I’d rather pay $50 then pick up my dogs turds & the chances of actually getting fined for something like this are slim to none.

Don’t know, but you could try doing what my father in law said he always did when caught with his dog on a non-dog beach….run for it!
