This in from Justice and Community Safety:

ACT Commissioner for Fair Trading, Brett Phillips is warning the Canberra community to be wary of unsolicited telephone calls, emails or door-to-door traders who offer deals which involve handing over money on the spot or obtaining personal details.

The warning follows a number of reports from consumers who received telephone calls from people claiming to be from Fair Trading Canberra or ACT Consumer Affairs.

During the phone calls, consumers were advised that a financial institution had been investigated by Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs and as a result of an investigation the consumer was entitled to receive a refund of over $4000. The consumers were then asked to pay $100 for a voucher and a cheque would then be provided to them.

Mr Phillips said that while details of each call may vary slightly, the fact of the matter is that the Office of Regulatory Services – Fair Trading Unit does not contact consumers out of the blue and does not charge people money to receive a refund they are allegedly entitled to.

I can’t believe people are so stupid. But how many are taken by Nigerian scams and many like them every day ?

I am totally blown away with the amount of ways these people come up with to rip people. At the moment i am looking to buy a small dog for my family, almost every add on any website for a dog wants over 400+ to adopt old dogs from the pound, or they want 800+ for a dog they think is a designer breed because their poodle got up the spout by the local mongrel cavalier. I wrote off to 4 people on all classies, and gumtree and every single one is a dickhead saying they will send me my dog if i just pay for him to be flown from NT or somewhere that is not Canberra. I just want a damn dog for Christs sake, that 1 doesn’t come with a huge price tag, or isn’t a mix breed of pittbull or mastiff or anything other breed that has poos bigger than a healthy human.

Respond to fake IT fixup callers like this:

“I’ll need to check your credentials – what is your head office’s phone number? I’ll call them and you can call me back in a few minutes once I’ve established that this is an authentic call”

If someone comes to your door and says he doing a governmental survey and wants you to show him your bum, DO NOT BE FOOLED. He is just a pervert who gets off on seeing your bum.

I only wish I’d know this yesterday. I feel so cheap now.

Can someone tell me of any legitimate scenario where by to receive funds from a person or company, they legitimately need to pay $x number of dollars to get the funds transferred?

I’m struggling to think of any scenario where by if it costs money to transfer money from a person or company such transfer costs can not be taken out of the amount been transferred by the sender, and not a prerequisite of the receiver.

(Ignoring any “cash back” offers on goods or services pre-purchased)
