The Coalition *will* chop into the APS. It’s their stated policy, and they’re financing some of their policies (or vote-winning promises) with the projected savings they’ll make. Chopping the APS is popular with the electorate, and it’s traditional for the conservatives who like to make loud noises about “small government”.

I don’t think Crikey has it quite right. A responsible government wouldn’t do anything so stupid as to cut the APS as window-dressing, but sadly our next government isn’t looking at all responsible.

Don’t forget that FaHCSIA will need a substantial workforce to develop and maintain titanic red tape for a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). There is little chance any politician will be able to manage the Public Service and how it feather’s its own nest in this exercise.
