ACT Policing is urging motorists to drive safely over the ANZAC Day long weekend and warns that some offences will incur double demerit points from Friday until Monday.

All speed and seatbelt offences, the use of a mobile phone while driving, driving with a passenger in or on part of the vehicle not designed for carrying passengers or goods and riding a motorbike without a helmet will incur double demerit points. All other offences will incur one extra demerit point.

Station Sergeant Susan Ball, the officer in charge of traffic operations, said police would continue to target all dangerous behaviour on ACT roads over the ANZAC Day long weekend.

“Remember to take regular rest breaks if you are travelling interstate and be patient on the roads. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” she said.

Seems odd that an offence is worth more punishment on certain days and not others.

Maybe we could do a super Tuesday like the movies where speeding is more acceptable?

If it doesn’t make sense to have less penalties on days why does it make sense to have more on others?

Why not just increase all of them to be worth these long weekend fines all the time?

Unless of course its like the penalty rates where its like a surcharge on public holidays. We have to give out more demerit points and fines because we have to pay the police more over the break.
