Double Demerits this weekend

As a firework fuelled orgy of destruction sweeps over the city and the corpses of dead dogs pile up amongst the broken glass of firework enabled crime sprees it’s important to keep our heads.

In my experience the Chief Minister never panics, he just gets angry, and he’s warning you all that it’s a long weekend this morning which means double-demerit points.

Traffic infringements such as speeding or failing to wear a seatbelt will attract double demerit points.

The increased penalties will apply from Friday 5 June to Monday 8 June inclusive.

“More people will be on the roads this weekend which means the risk of roads crashes is higher,” Mr Stanhope said. “I urge all drivers to adjust their speed to suit the driving conditions and to not drink and drive.”

Drivers who don’t wear a seatbelt or permit passengers under 16 years of age to travel in a vehicle unrestrained risk attracting six demerit points this long weekend.

Drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 45km/h risk attracting12 demerit points and licence suspension.

Drivers who exceed the speed limit by 31km/h to 45km/h will attract eight demerit points, while driving 16km/h to 30 km/h above the speed limit can attract six demerit points.

Drivers who commit other offences such as running red lights or failing to stop at stop signs will attract one extra demerit point on top of the usual number applied.

That concrete wall-thing on the Dairy Flat Rd bridge got another victim this morning. On the radio traffic warning thing they mentioned it, and sure enough there was a truck dragging the car off it, cops scampering about. It got two on Thursday evening that I saw. I wonder what genius designed that?

– it’s the low concrete dividing wall that channels cars coming from Fyshwick toward Moreshed, and divides them into traffic turning right to the airport, and traffic going straight onto Moreshed between the Duntroon playing fields.

There you go upsetting the people at Treasury again. Double demerit points all year round … that’s crazy talk!

if double demerit points are so effective, why not do it all year around?

I can’t see why failing to wear a seat belt is worse than running a red light.

Bigger mess to clean up off the road.

I’m not sure it really qualifies as a “rant”, it was more a contribution to the topic under discussion. Rants usually contain some evidence of anger or rancour. However, I guess that kind of distinction is a grey area for some.

Stanhope will be Angry, SuperNeit will be Disappointed, the drama of it all.

No one was getting speeding tickets from Qbn to Canberra this morning, that’s for sure. From Magnet Mart in Qbn, to the Canberra Airport, it was walking pace. And from Qbn on Canberra Avenue was about 3rd gear/2nd gear for most of it.

There were some rear-enders on Canberra Avenue though. I suspect the Pialligo Avenue debacle was a slow truck or earth moving equipment.

Another AntRant ……… lol I am one funny bugger !!!!

People drive carefully when it rains!!

and carefully does not mean 30km/h under the speed limit.. you’re just going to get other motorists angry and cause erratic behaviour.
