Dozspot not supporting the Gungahlin Mosque? [And Dozspot response]

Labor’s Joy Burch has the sad news that, while the Greens and Labor have re-affirmed their commitment to the Gungahlin Mosque proposal, The Liberals’ Steve Dozspot isn’t so keen:

Ms Burch, having strongly stated the ACT Government’s support for the aspirations of the Canberra Muslim community, sought and obtained similar assurances from the Greens through Amanda Bresnan MLA.

However Canberra Liberals spokesperson on Multicultural Affairs Steve Doszpot MLA, also present at the hearing, refused to provide support to Canberra’s Muslim community or to repudiate the anonymous leaflet.

“This is a matter of great disappointment” Ms Burch said,

“I hope the Canberra Liberals reflect on their position and provide a clear statement of support to the Muslim Community in Canberra and support their desire to build a mosque in Gungahlin.”

We hear the Human Rights Commission has been sicced onto the pamphleteers.

We’ve asked the Liberals for their side of the story and will provide it when available.

UPDATE 29/06/12 16:45: This in from the Liberals:

STATEMENT FROM STEVE DOSZPOT IN RESPONSE TO JOY BURCH

“This is arrant, insulting nonsense.

“This transparent, ridiculous construction tries to turn the fact that Joy Burch couldn’t answer questions about her own dismal performance into an attack on questioner. To try to tie race hate into the matter is disgusting and beneath contempt. I challenge her to quote one line from me to back up her accusation.

“I’m happy to support our Muslim community. I’m not happy to support a Minister who is not only the most incompetent in Territory history but also the most hateful and vindictive. It is no wonder so many people consider her a dangerous fool.”

What did Doszpot actually say against the mosque

Nothing. This whole thing was just the usual behaviour – Labor trying to turn attention away from something stupid they’ve done/said.

What did Doszpot actually say against the mosque

Personally, I find it hard to believe so many educated people can’t even spell his name correctly. Is that what passes for wit these days?

Does it surprise anyone that the Canberra Times today reveals that the self-styled “Concerned Citizens” group is led by a Christian pastor?

At least it explains the Libs’ position.

It’s sad how many people read the statement and believed it without even engaging their brains.

Where are all these people, exactly? Am I reading a different thread to you?

Posts #2, 4, 8 and 12 seem to demonstrate my point.

It’s a bit stiff when the Liberal spokesman for multicultural affairs doesn’t actually support multicultural affairs…

Umm, yes. But while he responded in a general positive way about the Muslim community (not surprising really, they can vote), Rioters will note that he avoided making a statement of direct support regarding the Mosque.

Why should he make any statement about the mosque? Burch didn’t say anything about direct support to the mosque. Read her statement again: “support for the aspirations of the Canberra Muslim community”.

This was not his estimates hearing. She was there to answer questions, not him. Burch then talked out her arse about how he doesn’t support the Muslim Community – clearly an unfounded statement – and Dozspot responded to it.

How did he “refuse to support Canberra’s Muslim community”? Because he refused to answer questions during the estimates hearing that *she* was supposed to be providing information to? She hasn’t even backed up her claim with any real information.

It’s sad how many people read the statement and believed it without even engaging their brains.

At least Doszpot is right in his comments on Burch

I love the politics and language over here, there’s no poncing about, mild insinuations, floated thoughts or mutual respect given….everything goes straight to an almighty punch up.

Nothing but prats and tosspots in the Libs.

Now with a response from Mr Dozspot. It’s going to be a doozy of an election year.

I bet Dozspot would support it if a few young soccer players worshipped there.

JB i’m not sure you’ve got the spelling right it’s Despot isn’t it??
