Dr Death on the loose?

Today’s Canberra Times has a story on the workings of the ACT Medical Board:

A Canberra doctor accused of failing to properly examine a patient who died in the car park shortly after a consultation has reached a confidential agreement with the ACT Medical Board. The board had initially applied to have the doctor’s registration cancelled, but in an aborted hearing before the Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday, the application was withdrawn.

Confidentiality be stuffed!

Whilst parents are fighting to have school tables published, I want Doctoring Tables.

So, I’ll know exactly who I don’t want to go to.

“Oh, here’s a smack on the wrist”. “You keep practising and you’ll get there”. Not on me, thanks.

I’m wit A.K.

54-11 is spot on. Medical Boards are a ‘boys’ club. If you went to Kings and Sydney medical school, it is inconceivable that you could be incompetent (not like those foreigners). While the AMA and Boards are separate, the AMA is very vocal about anything that might interfere with the doctors’ authority. Any attempt by government to promote accountability is met with pompous grandstanding and hiding behind emotive arguments about patient safety.

Most doctors actually have little to do with the AMA or any of the other gravy trains that are happy to accept vast amounts of government funding. Doctors deserve overwhelming respect and salaries commensurate with their training and responsibilities. Unfortunately the AMA, Boards, medical colleges etc do the rest of them a disservice.

O.K people, lets get that hate list out and start from the top of the list and recommend this doctor to all of them.

Morgan has a point, but in this case, this doctor has a history of poor prescribing, diagnosing and note-taking. And to allow him to continue to practise, albeit with another doctor in the room is reprehensible. With the current shortage of doctors it beggars belief that they would direct that one waste his valuable patient time sitting in with this moron. Dr. Death should be struck off permanently.

Morgan, that may be so (that patients can just drop dead) but when it happens, there must be an open and accountable process to make sure that lessons are learned.

Anything done inhouse, whether it’s Police, Defence, lawyers, doctors or whoever, will NEVER be open and accountable.

The AMA is the most predatory, closed shop, unionised labour foirce in the country. Makes stevedores, painters & dockers and all the others look like angels.

The Medical Board and the AMA are two completely different organisations. The AMA has no influence over the decisions of the medical board. And neither of them have any influence over the Health Care Complaints Commissioner, who is entirely independent of the profession, and has the most power of all over complaints against individual practitioners.

Fully agree with 54-11. Whenever shenanigans involve the legal or medical profession is involved public interest goes out the window.

I know of a surgeon (in another state) who has botched several gall bladder operations with fatal results.

Everyone in the medical profession knows about him but of course the public is kept in the dark.

There are lots of Dr Deaths out there.

There are loads of reasons why a patient might drop dead without a doctor being able to predict it. That is not to say in this case there was not negligence but there are innocent explanations.

I would hope that the ACT Medical Board and the Civil Tribunal would be able to make intellignent decisions.

Shite!!!!!

Scary.

They call this “medical misadventure”….

Can you imagine a dodgier room – one filled with shifty lawyers trying to protect hopeless doctors?

I’d put money on that being at Majura Medical Centre.
