A 19-year-old P-plater has been suspended from driving for at least three months after being caught going 45 km over the speed limit.

At about 9:30 pm on Monday (27 June), officers carrying out speed enforcement checks clocked a Toyota sedan going 135 km/h in the 90 zone on Gungahlin Drive in Aranda.

When officers spoke with the male driver, police said he indicated he “just wanted to get home quickly”.

He accrued four demerit points, was issued a $700 fine and will have his license suspended for at least three months.

Officer in Charge of ACT Road Policing, Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said this type of reckless behaviour was “incredibly selfish” and could have long lasting consequences.

“People need to consider that their choices on the road can kill. This young man could have injured himself or someone else,” he said.

“2022 has been fraught with death. We need to take road behaviours more seriously.”

I thought the P stood for ‘privileged’ because I get overtaken by them all the time especially when I am sticking to the speed limit?

Recent ACT government messages:
