Drug prohibition when the stuff just boils out of the ground

The fungii are definitely on the move at the moment in all their weird and wonderful variety.

While walking the Kelpie Of Few Accomplishments yesterday I came across a large outcropping of these magnificent buggers.

(No, I’m not going to tell you where.)

Personally I take this sort of colouring as a clear message: “If you eat me I am going to mess you up”

But others seem to like being messed up in the manner of these mushrooms.

Which got me thinking about all the people in our society who think all things are within the command of the laws which they will have written.

Plenty of them read here.

The ones who think that all things which scare or disturb them can be banned, or controlled. If just enough laws are passed and enough “examples” are set (meaning lives needlessly ruined).

And yet, and yet. Even if you passed all the laws and locked up all those who failed to comply (in facilities where the inmates still manage to get hold of drugs despite all the bars and locks and searches), even if you managed all that.

These things would still keep boiling out of the ground.

(Also, before anyone runs out and gobbles up mushrooms, if you don’t already know what you’re doing it is extremely dangerous and you can kill yourself. Not recommended)

We’ve got mushrooms growing in our backyard – just went to have a look and take pics (and remove them using gloves) and it looks like I had a couple had mottled brown tops with white gills, one had the cap tightly closed around the stalk (so I couldn’t see the gills) and a couple had mottled brown tops with light brown gills… but they could have just been older versions of the white gilled ones. I’m guessing this means I have some nice poisonous ones… great :o(

Anyone know how to permanently get rid of them? They seem to come up this time every year.

We spent a nice afternoon gathering about 40 goldern tops near Balina in the early 90s with interesting results after making them into a tea. But they dont look like those there much smaller ive seen them around Canberra as well. Up in Balina they can be seen growing mainly around cow dung. They dont taste very good but the effect is basically the same as LSD.

Looks like “ludacris” has become a running gag on this site . . .

Exactly. If you don’t know (really know) what you are ingesting ….. don’t do it

they had a story on sydney weekender last saturday about picking mushrooms up near oberon. they have tours where they teach you which mushrooms to pick, and the red ones with the spots was a big no no, even though they are featured in so many childrens books.

You would have to be mad to go out and eat some mushrooms based on a picture.

The one in the picture looks very large compared to the ones I remmember…

@enrique

It address’s that very thing

My 22.07 is still in moderation. I kinda think its important

(No, I’m not going to tell you where.)

Smart move – you’ll probably get some idiot kid reading this post and thinking it would be cool to try it. They will get sick and then you’ll have all kinds of issues on your hands.

People, don’t go playing with mushrooms… if you get even a tiny amount of, say for example, a death cap in your collected bounty you will get very sick and may even die.

I should add that I’m not exaggerating when I say “you will die if you eat one nightcap”

You will

This is a Goldtop = (You will trip)= http://tinyurl.com/qjnzdt

This is a Nightcap = (You will die) http://tinyurl.com/onl58fhttp://tinyurl.com/csggju

The blue squeeze thing is very, very important. (Although I not foolproof)

“And yet, and yet. Even if you passed all the laws and locked up all those who failed to comply (in facilities where the inmates still manage to get hold of drugs despite all the bars and locks and searches), even if you managed all that.

Same logic behind paedophiles, rapists, armed robbers….name your crime type. They have been illegal since time immemorial but they still keep emerging

Not sure if I should post this as I’m concerned it may be interpreted in a way different to my intention.

MM(Magic Mushies) as they were known in my day can be a total blast, but they do have a very heavy downside.

1. Coming down ain’t so great – seriously

2. One wrong mushroom will kill you, seriously.

3. Not sure but I assume they’re illegal

So I did a hunt and found this vid on youtube. To my mind it has very real potential to save somebody eating the wrong one and thats a good thing.(you will die if you eat a nightcap or similar) It could also be seen as a “Mushies for Dummies” type thing, thats not what I intended. (are we clear on that!)

So here goes

JB. Bit concerned about the mushroom post. I don’t know anything about the type you pictured but I do remember from years ago(20+) what the most common type of MM we hunted looked like. They looked nothing like your pics.(although that was in QLD and N-NSW) Anyway it got me thinking and so I did a search and I found this youtube thingy that does a good job of identifying the ones up Northern NSW way. I don’t advocate people trying them (been there, done that, years ago) but I’m concerned some kids might read that post and go looking for those mushies you pictured.

Should point out that while going up it’s pretty wild, down as I remember – not so great

My advise is don’t try them, but if you are determined, please be very, very careful
(I checked with RA before posting this and got an OK)

Spectra (#8) to justice Higgins it is an acceptable defence.

Which is exactly why I felt compelled to mention it alongside the idea of sticking to just pursuing the real crimes (ie, the ones that actually directly hurt someone else). No good sticking to those if you can trivially construct a ready-made defence.

If when you squeeze the stalk turns blue

Much laughter, colors and strange things too

But if the stalk perhaps turns grey

It may well be your very last day

what the hell are you talking about?

god it must be friday, cos i made no sense of that at all.

Hmmm fermented turds eh? I’ll leave that one to you and grab some fresh mushrooms when I’m next in Amsterdam.

He needs sentencing counselling.

My dream is that one day a Magistrate’s pathetic sentence results in that Magistrate being sued for negligence by the crim’s subsequent victims (who wouldn’t be victims if the crim were in gaol where he belongs).
Naturally, the legal system is designed to insulate Magistrates 100% against any such well-deserved result of their negligence in sentencing.

Didn’t a local mushroom expert (from one of the uni’s) incorrectly identify an ‘edible’ one and then fall off the perch recently?

Get your mushrooms in a shop I say….

interesting that they got it so very wrong…

Not really that interesting – just sounds like the usual “spiders came out of her cheek” story to me.

That’s a lovely patch of Fly Agarics, Johnboy.
If you eat a couple of them, you get the toxic effects.
Alternatively, you do what the Siberians did and feed a few of them to your Witch-doctor. You then drink your Witch-doctor’s Urine for a much more controlled (and therefore safer) dosage.

I thought the whole development of agriculture thing happened about ten thousand years ago just to avoid situations like these (#3 and #14). It’s great not to have to worry whether your food is kill you or to engage in the experimentation required to determine the best animal to pass your drugs through for best results.

Ill stick to my dried porcini.

Those are some very ornate mushrooms. I’ve got all sorts of mushrooms coming up, even in my lawn! But I ain’t eating them. Most of them have white gills.

Personal responsibility? Nah…it’ll never work. Best just to ban everything.

So charge the stupid twerps for the things they actually do!

And, equally importantly, make sure “I was stoned out of my gourd, your honour” is not an acceptable defence or even mitigating factor.

Yup, that works for me.

Deadmandrinking12:14 pm 08 May 09

Of course, one would take in the person’s history of use and possible factors that may have led to abuse (use and abuse are two different things), to best determine whether the person needs treatment rather than incarceration or debt (perhaps they could actually enforce rehabilitation by setting consequences if offenders do not attend). Crime under the influence is not okay and sometimes, like a lot of crime, it’s symptomatic of other things that need to be dealt with in a proper manner.

Also, isn’t it weird how our society has banned plants that GROW OUT OF THE FREAKIN’ GROUND!!!! Nature has been served her notice!

Absolutely agreed.

From some article on the net (first few result from googling “magic mushroom”):

“Some people eat poisonous mushrooms thinking that they are ‘magic mushrooms’ – this can be very dangerous, as some poisonous mushrooms can cause death or permanent liver damage.”

Ugh… perm liver damage. Australians should know that that’s the job for beer.
(as you can tell, it’s Friday…)

So charge the stupid twerps for the things they actually do!

I tend to agree with you Johnboy, but here’s the thing: the problem really isn’t the wowsers and retard alarmists, it’s the selfish stupid twerps who do stupid and reckless things while under the influence that get the wowsers all wowsy and the retard alarmists retardedly alarmed.

I hate stupid selfish twerps even more than I hate wowsers and retarded alarmists.

Anyone know of any reindeer near Canberra?

Dad just loved telling us the story as kids about some monks somewhere who discovered it was safer to feed fly agaric to raindeer and then drink the raindeer urine to get high. I just can’t imagine ever being that desperate.

Or you could just smoke weed like a normal person.

…oh wait.

I would caution against eating those ones – common name is the Fly Agaric – they’re really toxic in Australia. The American version of them though will give you a magic carpet ride.

Golden Tops, however, are equally abundant in the ACT (I saw them growing just outside the GG’s fence once) and will deliver the desired result.
