Drunk girl playing in traffic in Lyneham

Rioter Richard just sent us in this video of a girl foolishly playing in traffic whom he claims later died in an accident.

I uploaded a vid from yesterday on youtube. It is a drunk teenage girl playing chicken with traffic in lyneham. I was originally not going to post it as it isn’t all that dramatic, but only a few hours later a girl was tragically hit by a car. I have tried searching around for a story on it online but as it is a sunday, I dont think any news outlets have picked it up yet.

Yesterday we ran a story from ACT Policing about an 18 year old girl who was hit around that time in that area, and it seems likely that this is the same girl.

She is in a “serious but stable condition”.

If we hear more about the girl’s well-being I’ll post an update, in the meantime let’s wonder at what point playing chicken with traffic seems like a good idea.

I am amazed at those drivers who think people should be in the left hand lane even if rules don’t require it. It is courteous but, really, you should take a breath if someone doesn’t do it when you want them to. After all, at 80km/h, 60km/h or even less, how much time are they really costing you?

I suspect also that these drivers don’t go interstate much. Try driving in the left hand lane on many Sydney roads and you’ll soon find yourself stuck behind a parked car.

And it must drive them absolutely crazy on the three lane and four lane freeways around Sydney and elsewhere. Even I have to admit that those who stick to the middle lanes are forcing others to the right or, worse, encouraging nutters to pass at speed on the inside lane because the right hand side is already clagged with overtaking traffic. Improved road design where the right lane ends (rather than the left lane) from time to time would help this.

Well, that escalated quickly into nothing to do with the subject.

I’m a big advocate for getting the hell out of the RHS lane if there’s no need to be there, but on that street? Who cares? It’s a pokey little street in a 60 zone. There’s places where it just feels “right” to move over to the left (even in under 80km zones), and then there’s places where it’s just doesn’t matter.

Well yeah, on a road like Hindmarsh drive from the hospital to Narrabundah it makes sense, but not on dingy little suburban roads in the inner north, and pretty much never on roads 60 or under. If there’s no requirement to ‘keep left’ in force, needing to turn right 300m down the road is a perfectly good reason to stay in the right hand lane. It is NOT an overtaking lane on roads 80km or under, simple as that.

From the reaction of some on this thread you’d think the video poster was actually doing something flagrantly illegal and most of the posters, when challenged, have no argument other than pointless abuse.

Um yes, that’s exactly what I was saying…

Dashboard camera- many people have them installed for insurance purposes nowadays.

Not as foolish as you as for being in the right lane for no reason whatsoever. In fact I think she was telling you to learn how to drive and get in the left lane.

From memory that would be a 60 zone.
There is no requirement whatsoever for drivers to keep left on roads limited 80km/hour or slower. “Keep left” is a rule for highways/parkways, not suburban streets.

Just deal with it. You don’t have a god given right to speed in the right lane.

How about you deal with it also and stay left?

Thing is, after reading so many self entitled posts about owning the right lane, I seem to find my self always use the right hand lane now(doing exactly the speed limit, of course).

It’s got SFA to to with owning anything. It’s about courtesy. Do you also hold people up on foot paths, bike paths and escalators.

+10000

Wow …. I admire rioter’s abilities to always bring the story back to “My way of thinking is right and I couldn’t possibly consider yours, cause you’re a knob”

In Richard the rioters defence, judging by the sound of the engine,he wasn’t exactly dawdling when he took off from the lights which is the main reason why peeps get so pissed off with ‘some’ right lane drivers..

Why? because you insist? It’s not a rule. It’s not even ‘common courtesy’.

It is common courtesy, and you are a fair d***. Unless you need to be in the right hand lane, don’t sit in there. Use it for overtaking or get into it if you need to turn right at the next intersection. People cruising along at 55 in the right lane in a 60 zone for no good reason are simply inconsiderate, self involved knobs.

+1.

Why? because you insist? It’s not a rule. It’s not even ‘common courtesy’. The whole argument being presented here is basically ‘use the left lane because I says so, don’t be a knob’.

It makes sense for fast roads where there’s lots of more or less constantly moving traffic so faster moving vehicles can seamlessly overtake slower ones, but it’d be completely absurd to adhere to it at 8:30am on Northbourne. You would actually end up getting in the way of others as you tried to change lane to turn at the last minute instead of when it’s first convenient to do so.
Surprise surprise, this corresponds perfectly to the road rules – keeping left is only necessary on roads faster than 80km/hour.

Keeping left irrespective of the road out of ‘courtesy’ is even more absurd given the lack of courtesy displayed by most Canberra drivers when it comes to someone moving into ‘their’ lane.

It is common courtesy. Something you clearly haven’t been taught when learning to drive!

How am I holding anybody up?

MonarchRepublic4:47 pm 23 Jul 13

On the stretch of road in the vid, I’d have thought it more considerate to be in the right lane, if continuing straight towards kaleen etc. That way you are not slowing people down that want to turn left onto ginninderra drive at full speed…

Has anybody else been assuming that there’s another car to the left? Girl dances in front of left lane. From an intersection there would be a few cars queued up.

OMG THEY ARE DOING 5KPH LESS THAN THE SPEED LIMIT I’M SO ANGRY SO VERY ANGRY!!!

FFS, even if the unlikely scenario you describe of some slow poke sitting in the RHL, then theoretically you’d pass them sitting politely in the left lane going at the posted speed limit. Unless, like I suspect, you’re one of the types who demands every body else stay left so that you can drive as fast as you like in the right hand land.

No-one said anything about 55 in a 60 zone, you mean doing 60 in a 60 zone when you wanna speed past at 70kph. I’d consider it common courtesy to follow the damn speed limit, get over it man.

Agreed. I wish these blind selfish pricks would GTFO of my way and stay in the left lane unless they need to overtake a blind grandma doing 35 or to turn into a sidestreet.

Plus, if he’d already been in the left lane, the camera footage of the girl would have been much more detailed… as she went over the bonnet.

Luckily the incident in the video isn’t as bad as it could be.

On New Years Eve in 2009, I was heading up the Hume Hwy with a 7×13 trailer on the car, doing about 90, when I saw this bloke walking down the shoulder of the road. I remember thinking it was odd and he must’ve broken down, as it was at the Illawarra Hwy interchange and the service centre was down the road a bit.

Instead of just walking along, he decided to jump out in front of my car, I had another guy overtaking me at the time, thankfully he saw what happened and saw me swerve to try and miss this guy. Luckily no one collected anyone and we were using a high quality road.

I ended up calling the cops, but the 000 call centre had a lot of trouble finding a police unit or station to respond. They apparently tried surrounding areas (I assume Moss Vale and Mittagong), before putting my call through to Goulburn. By the time I finished the call it was 20 minutes later.

I never heard back from the police as to what happened to the guy but I hope that he was stopped and got some help. To this day the whole event still doesn’t sit well with me.

I saw a genius pedestrian randomly leap out in front of a motorcyclist in Gordon St, Civic last week, and jump around trying to block the road. The motorcyclist had to swerve to avoid him. People, DON’T DO STUPID THINGS ON THE ROADS, please.
Peace, love and light to you all.

You’re kidding right? Why does he need to be in the left hand lane in a 60 zone? What if he is turning right in to the hockey centre? Are you one of those morons who will speed up to the backside of someone in the left lane doing 90 on the parkway to then accelerate on the left at the first sign of a slip lane?

By parkway I mean GDE.

This video is hardly anything to make a fuss about, and it’s exceedingly unlikely to be the same girl as the one unfortunately struck in Civic. Dancing in front of cars was (embarrassingly) a young teenage passtime when I was 14/15. You’d do it well ahead of the car and get out of the way with plenty of room, and the young lady in this video wasn’t even doing it in the same lane as the vehicle. It’s stupid and annoying, but nothing at all to get worked up over.

I think the police could use this video

Northbourne/London is nowhere near Mouat/Archibald,besides if a female had been killed we would’ve heard about it. It has been reported however that the female who was hit by a Hyundai Sonata at Northbourne/London is,sadly,in a critical condition.
