ACT Policing was required to close the Monaro Highway in both directions early this morning (Thursday, June 28) after a drink-driver collided heavily with a roadside barrier and blocked traffic.

The incident was reported around 4.43am today and police, together with ACT Fire and Rescue, immediately responded. The silver Holden Commodore was found at the location with extensive front and rear damage.

Both occupants, the driver and front seat passenger, were uninjured. The driver, a 24-year-old man from Narrabundah, returned a positive reading to a roadside screening test and was later found to have an Alcohol Content (AC) of 0.135. He is a provisional licence-holder and therefore required to have a zero blood alcohol content.

The driver was issued with an immediate suspension notice.

Police were required to divert traffic around the Canberra Avenue overpass for more than 90 minutes while the damaged vehicle was extracted and a heavy forklift used to place the crash barriers back in position.

The driver will be summonsed to court at a later date. Any witnesses to the collision are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers website on www.act.crimestoppers.com.au.

And being such a responsible, law-abiding and generally upstanding member of society, I’m sure this person will undoubtedly adhere zealously to the conditions of his license suspension…

He’d better, or he’ll get such a talking to!

He was probably confused by the Falken tyres ad on one of the barriers and thought he was at Bathurst.
