The Canberra Times brings word that the centre of this morning’s police wrap over animal cruelty to rottweilers in Nicholls is one Dusko Culibrk.

Dusko is 25 and lives with his parents. Apparently Dusko didn’t think choke chains go far enough and ACT Health psychologist Jacinta Marsh has told Magistrate Beth Campbell that his discipline methods involved choking them until they passed out.

He’s been remanded in custody.

Choke them until they pass out…..if only you people knew how commonplace a practice this was..in organisations that have been training dogs longer than most of you have been around. Not saying it’s right, in fact I don’t think it works, from personal experience, but it’s a legitimate technique in some eyes.

Yes there is a mental health unit in the “Hume Hilton”.

Yes, the Crisis Team does not attend violent incidents alone – that’s what police are for. They’ll attend with police, not without. Or the police bring the person to the mental health worker, so they can be assessed in a safe environment instead of one full of dogs, weapons, filth or whatever.

If Canberra wants a mental health service with coercive powers, one that can act without assistance of police, think large men in white coats, syringes and maybe even tranquilliser guns, windowless white vans and reminiscences of Stalin’s USSR.

Pete

People immediately jump to the mental health option.

Bad not mad in this case I reckon.

Well I for one would love to see him be treated the same way or worse than he treated them dogs who in there right mine sold/gave this dead beat 1 dog let alone 3, If the neighbours did film what he was doing to them why weren’t the dogs taken from him before this happened no animal deserves any treatment like that as part of discipline, and as I said before the 2 remaining dogs are going to need a great carer and new home to over come what has happened or worse they will have to be put down. It’s just so sad and it makes me sick.

Metal health is no excuse either.

I feel sorry for the dogs but this is a good example of support that is received for mental health people and their families. Stuff All. It is only when a person kills that you can get help. Have some sympathy for the father who was living with it and had to retreat to the car. Calling the police does not help as they are poorly equiped to deal with mental health cases and can only lock them up until they have cooled down. Mental Health Units will not attend where a person is being violent. So what options are there?

Only if they misbehaved fgzk, only if they misbehaved.

Give Judges more alternatives to protect the community other than jail……Not happening.

Not much can be done. You could vote P.B. in as chief minister but he would probably also hang pregnant teenagers and public housing tenants.

I like the way you think, lethal injection, great alternative to gaol…

“What on earth can be done with someone who would do this???”

Fund mental health. ………Not happening.
Support the family and friends……..Not happening.
Give Judges more alternatives to protect the community other than jail……Not happening.
Provide ongoing medical support and supervision…………….Not happening.
Fund long term secure mental health facilities……………May be happening.

Put him in gaol where he can’t harm other people or animals. That’s what it’s there for.

there are dog owners and dog lovers…this is so sick…this guy needs serious help

The neighbours video’ed the attack, and are now scared of retribution.
And when police visited, his father was sleeping outside in his car, as he was scared of his violent son.

So I think everyone knew, but were too scared to do anything.

What on earth can be done with someone who would do this???

The parents must have known the dogs were being mistreated. Neighbours, too, no doubt.

This story from the ABC shows that a neighbour did know, since they filmed it and told the police. Parents obviously knew he was dangerous, since the mother has been stabbed in the past, and the father was sleeping in the car to stay away from him.

As they say people who do this type of thing to animals, eventually do this to other people, he should be locked up and recieve help.

Top bloke!

Is there a mental health unit in the remand section of the Hume Hilton?

If not, just what the hell do you do with this individual?

The parents must have known the dogs were being mistreated. Neighbours, too, no doubt. This case is apalling and should not have ended this way for the three animals involved. As per the ferret killers, I am confident that our judicial system will deal with this person in a way which makes it clear how little the humane treatment of animals is valued by our society.
