Just drill through your drive. nothing will bring it back.

I have finished collecting computers and associated ewaste – I got over 500 items and had a lot of fun thanks to all callers. One house had over 50 PCs and boards by the boxfull – the dude got a bedroom back out of it….

Thanks RiotAct got a great response from the above comment I posted just over a year ago.

Awesome – I’ve got a huge load of gear that has been waiting for the next free ewaste event!

Knowing Canberrans, and their thirst for IT (and subsequent replacement of old kit), I reckon there will be a big turn out.

You would think, wouldn’t you, that when I came back and checked the details, that I would also look at the date! I even checked the location and time THREE TIMES before going out, but it never occurred to me to check the date!

Oh well, I will now nominate myself for the title of Goose of the Week for the second week running…

And next week, I will probably forget entirely, and be Goose of the Week a third time!

Writing zeros over data up to x amount of times is standard on mac.

It also complies with international data destruction standards too 🙂

Nailguns are an effective way to render disks useless, but they complicate recycling …

Here is a link to a utility that will clean a hard drive of files and make it very safe to dispose of confident that your data has been obliterated;

http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

This sort of utility deletes files and overwrites the disk with data to prevent someone from using a data recovery tool to restore deleted files – its a better option than just file deletes or formatting a drive.

Personally I find physical destruction of the disk platter(s) more satisfying.

We’ve been waiting for this.

Another good deed by RA.

I take them all apart, sort plastics, steel, brass, copper and plated components. Drives are opened for their magnets and platters and are generally made with a nice chunk of aluminum. The plated components are processed to yield precious metals, mainly gold and silver which I refine. Its a lot of work but I find it quite amusing and get lots of good junk for my other projects. I have done about 100 so far over the past six weeks or so

More than happy to physically destroy a drive in front of the security concerned types, not a bad way to go if you are getting rid of an old PC if your handy with a screwdriver have a variety of torx bits and a largish hammer, gloves and safety goggles 🙂

Breaking the platters is the best bet but just destroying the controller board for the drive would make it very hard to get data off the drive.

I just signed up so I’ll give it a whirl

lodge it with freecycle. 🙂

Ah well looks like I’m going to have to do the midnight covert kerb ditch. If anyone wants an old grey fabric lounge, give me a yell.

Just out of curiousity, how do you make money from old computer parts when recylcing places like Mitchell is charging for their disposal?

By going through your hard-drive before it’s “destroyed during recycling process” and stealing your “private data” to assume your identity?

Nah if you put a sign saying “Free” it might not… but if you put a sign saying “$10” on it it’ll definitely disappear 😉

Plant clippings have the greenwaste people at the tip, (Cahill Bros?) freecycle the lounges\microwave if they’re serviceable, and days like this one are for the monitors.

There are “leave things out on the kerb, people will take them” days organised, otheriwse put a sign saying “Free” on it and it will probably disappear.

Does anyone know if there any kind of “council cleanup” in Canberra where you ditch all your crap on the kerbside on a designated date and someone picks it up? When I lived in Orange we used to get this a couple of times a year maybe.

I have a couple of 2 seater lounges, a microwave and PC monitor to get rid off along with other kinds of crap (including plant clippings) and I have no idea how I’m going to get rid of it all.

Fantastic news, thanks for letting us know

Cheers for that Peter. Since you’re in Downer, I think I might just pop over from the next suburn where I live and drop it off.

I collect computers, monitors, printers, laptops and mobile phones for recycling and offer a free pickup service for Canberra addresses. Just call Peter on 0438 616 762 to arrange collection – leave your unwanted items on the porch and I will collect them. All hard drives are destroyed during recycling process so your private data is safe.

No need to queue up during the weekend and is a free service – just a minimum of 1 computer per pickup.

Cheers
Peter

Take this opportunity, or end up paying up to $25 to dispose your old computer.

This is such a great idea. I hope that they do this regularly.
