Dozens of new shade trees, raingardens and seating are part of the final designs for the $4 million Tuggeranong Laneways project, which may get underway as early as January.

Transport and City Services Minister Chris Steel says the Government is bringing forward the project, with a tender for construction released.

Mr Steel said the laneways precinct from Lake Tuggeranong to Anketell Street will be more accessible, safer and inviting, and will help bring more commercial activity to the Town Centre.

“During consultation, Tuggeranong residents told us they wanted clear views from Anketell Street to the lake, level spaces for activities and better pedestrian access,” he said.

“We hope this new space will see more activity in the upgraded laneways and construction will be completed ahead of schedule for next year’s SouthFest.”

The works will include 40 new deciduous trees, improved pavement levels for walkers and cyclists, seating and shade structures, water-permeable paving around trees, raingardens and irrigated grass near the lakeshore.

The raingardens will help to both soften the space and capture water to prevent nutrient run-off into waterways.

The new design increases the space available for outdoor dining, allows for events and provides better views and improved access for walkers and cyclists.

“These upgrades form just one part of the ACT Government’s plan for Tuggeranong, revitalising the Town Centre,” Mr Steel said.

When have these Government projects for Tuggeranong ever lived up to the Ministers claims and the artists impressions?

The new Anketell st work is nothing like original promises, the project work between the crossing and Library ended up nothing like the original concepts. Erindale Bus and street upgrade proved nothing like the promises from the Minister. Releasing grand plans before going out to a set dollar tender, is putting the cart before the horse.

I just hope this much needed project is not another Tuggeranong half funded project that only makes union approved and connected companies richer, but the community the project was meant for not actually better off.
