East Bar and Grill curries. $10 lunch review

beef vindaloo

Finally! A great curry lunch option in Civic!

East Bar and Grill is a new player on East Row in the bus interchange just down from the Phoenix.

At first glance it is not promising.

The decor is “early 90s night club”, the staff while well intentioned are hilariously inept, the noise/music is too loud, and there are big screen TVs with the cricket on.

(I like the cricket, I’ve got it on right now. It’s just often the mark of a good restaurant).

The menu is a slightly bemusing combination of “curry joint” and “burger bar”.

But right now they’re doing curries for $7.90, down from a normal price of $9.90.

With all of the above weighing against it I was surprised when my beef vindaloo came out.

It looked the business.

It came with a big basket of naan bread and papadum.

The beef was melt in your mouth tender. The vindaloo was fiery and yet flavoursome.

I started sweating from the back of my neck, my eyes began to water, my nose began to run, and yet it was delicious!

Curry heaven!

It was, in short, a really really good curry going for a very reasonable price!

Oh I am thinking just the place for me!

Sounds very good, but the cricket TV would definitely keep me away.

“finally”?

what about the burma curry place round the corner? seven bucks take away and deee-lishus.

still, might have to give this new lot a go.

I have long sung the praises of the burmese curry.

But it’s more a damn good meal than a curry (OK, Indian curry)

“curry joint” and “burger bar”.

Does that mean I can get Curry and Chips ?

They do have a vegetarian curry that was brought to our table by mistake.

It looked pretty good actually.

Let me put that more politely. Did you happen to notice if there was a vegetarian option at this excellent price, oh wise but meaty moderator?

Vegetarian?
