Hard drinking RiotACT readers will be pleased to learn that, pending delivery of the defence white paper in a decade’s time, Edgar’s Inn of Ainslie has been fortified against aerial observation and attack by Main Battle Tank.

If that perfidious Power To Our North comes for us they’ll have do it with infantry, in turn vulnerable to pint glass.

UPDATED: Proving that things really did happen during my year at the coast it turns out that just last April b2 alerted RiotACT to a mad Volvo attack on the Edgar’s clientelle.

Also RiotACT’s military consultants have been out to inspect the defences and think a serious tank *might* be able to broach the planters. But while they do it will be very vulnerable to RPG’s aimed at their thin belly armour. So Edgar’s has been provisionally approved for tank safe drinking.

actually i thought they were a bit ordinary but when i spoke to the so called gardener one morning he explained that the shrubs will grow out and not to high and the vines over lap and fall down over the planters, i thought that they will look pretty good. i will be drinking there for sure, nothing like a bit of protection from the crazy old lady in the volvo

Perhaps it is the pb’s version of a monumen tto Adrian Bruford?

The management know the obvious that Volvo drivers have now upgraded to 4WDs with bullbars.
These vehicles are particularly adapted to jumping gutters for anywhere parking and now have reversing cameras to avoid children and slow moving senior citizens.

Looks like private enclosure of public land to me. Bring back the commons!

Although I do enjoy a drink on said public land, courtesy of Edgars and sitting on the furniture they thoughtfully provide…

OK, perhaps I’m missing something here but what does a pub in Ainslie have to do with a white paper released by defence?

ah, how refreshing to hear the opinions of those who don’t read newspapers of watch the news.

who cares, great food!

farnarkler: it could be improved with some well thought out street art 😛

Exactly! Mind you, ACTPLA might crack a wobbly and make them remove them anyway.

#11 exactly, before those below us on the evolutionary scale take to that what must be very tempting bare concrete with grafitti.

I can certainly see the merit in protecting yourself from Dot or Ethel but holy crap those things are ugly! Maybe they should enlist the services of a college art class and have them painted.

Those with a reasonable history of the Ainslie Shops in their memories will remember a situation where an old lady in a car reversed through an outdoor eating area, injuring one or two patrons. I guess Edgars are responding to this type of situation.

I was at Shop-Rite just after it happened and I don’t recall seeing anyone being taken away injured …

If there is truly a problem with safety then it is up to Urabn Services to install bollards or something similar. It shouldn’t be difficult to make something that stops a car but allows pedestrians access. The planters pictured above summon up images of the Maginot Line.

Let’s hope the oldies have forgotten the lessons of history and don’t invade through the lowlands!

(I agree the outside seating improves the amenity of the shops, and the google image above shows that they previously had pedestrian impermeable barricades .. still looks bloody awful).

In my view Ainslie is much improved by the provision of outdoor space in which to sup one’s brew in fine company.

All well and good (Declaration of interest: I have sampled a bevvie or two at Edgars myself) but does anyone else get a little bit concerned about a public space being appropriated by a private business? It is pretty much saying P*SS OFF! to anyone who previously dared to try to walk through the seating area.

I couldn’t find any application for planning permission on the ACTPLA website. I’d be pretty astonished if they could pop those there without permission.

Sheesh, those must be deep-rooted lavender and grasses!

Hmmm they forgot netting. Silly old Dot or Ethel will come flying through their windscreens.

Great! Now I can fully relax there while I enjoy a pint at day’s end, knowing that when silly old Dot or Ethel is overwhelmed by mild dementia and mistakes the accellerator for a break pedal, they are going to damage only themselves.

Better yet, surround the Goodwin Village carpark with these planter boxes and we won’t have to fortify ourselves like we live in the ‘green zone’.
