Efficiency dividend goes up. Just sit there and don't do anything!

As the Rudd Junta charges on, with dubious legitimacy, like a bull in the public policy china shop, today we have the announcement that the gaping holes in the finances are to be plugged in part with an increase in the efficiency dividend.

The public service efficiency dividend will be increased to 2¼ per cent per annum for the three years from 2014?15, continuing the Government’s record of driving higher efficiencies in the public sector.

While decisions on how the efficiency dividend is applied are properly a matter for heads of departments and agencies, we have a strong expectation that agencies will first look at non?staffing activities before considering staff reductions.

So don’t sack anyone, just have them sitting around not doing anything expensive.

This, of course, on top of the raids on smokers and banks.

Indexing fuel excise to CPI is actually a really excellent idea.

Um, do you understand positive feedback?

I do in fact.

Fuel only has ~3% weighting in the CPI.

The feedback would be negligible.

How much revenue would it raise do you think?

I worked it out quickly here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ah9ArNExjgkydFZKN0xLSFpUaHd1bmxXVDBSUFQtaUE&usp=sharing

Since 2001 about $56 billion dollars has been lost to accumulated revenue due to craven populism. Obviously a more accurate figure could be achieved by a researcher not playing world of tanks and not just choosing the first google result for their references.

Public servants are their own worst enemy. They continually get payrises well above CPI and well above national average payrises. ACT public servants are rejecting a 2% per annum payrise. Shows how out of touch they are, when most private businesses are struggling to give payrises.

A bit of a cull may make things a bit more affordable around town!

Exactly the response you’d hope for from them.

Better late than never then, I suppose. Where have they been for the past couple of years of cuts?

So where is the CPSU in all this? Or are they to busy giving labor a handie like usual

Did you bother trying to find out before taking your cheap shot? Their response was posted to their website nearly a full hour before your post – http://cpsu.org.au/news/31747.html

” The CPSU Executive met this afternoon and decided to suspend all Federal Election campaigning ahead of a crisis meeting on Monday 5 August.

CPSU National Secretary Nadine Flood said, “The CPSU totally opposes this decision. It’s bad for public sector workers and it’s bad for the eight million Australians who rely on the services they deliver.

“Years of cuts like this have done major damage to services and lead to massive backlogs such as 425,000 unprocessed Centrelink debts. The Department of Human Services has lost close to 4000 jobs since 2011 while the demand for services has increased. For the Government to claim these cuts will improve services and productivity is frankly insulting to staff.

“We are calling on the Government to reconsider this awful decision.”

Exactly the response you’d hope for from them.

They’re very busy with “You just know it will be SO much worse under Abbott…”

At least they are telling the truth. Abbott has preety much announced a planned recession for the ACT economy.
Any Canberran who plans to vote Liberal is an utter dingbat.

Any Canberran who plans to vote Labor is an utter dingbat. How many job cuts have there been? How many are there going to be with this additional efficiency dividend?

Don’t worry. Labor could promise to install gas chambers in Garema Place and hold a ballot for places and people in Canberra would still vote for them. Not only that, according to a recent Canberra Times poll the return of Kevin Rudd has put the Liberal Senate seat at risk and there is now a very strong chance that Simon Sheikh will win.

Labour are thinking of bringing back the TV license.
.

Yeah, that’ll work. There’s so many good shows on TV that are worth paying money to watch.

(note to self- really must get to work on that sarcasm font. The world needs it)

Bring back the automatic fuel excise rises!

The table on page 57 suggests savings of nearly $600m in 2015-16, and almost $1bn in the following year – that seems very high, for a quite small increase in the percentage rate of the dividend(?):

If there are no actual public servants left employed, they’ll start saving money in a heap of other ways – no more travel, no heating, no buildings, no new policies to pay for, cause there will be no one to implement them….

The budget is that bad they have to penny pinch.

Perhaps John Birmingham is onto something.

“Dubious legitimacy”, except for the small fact that, you know, his Party were elected and then re-elected with no suggestion of electoral fraud, and both those wins being the result of public dissatisfaction with the pro-Murdoch nutjobs who are currently hijacking the Liberal Party?

You seem to be falling for the bullshit, JB.

I heard some very interesting meta-news on Radio National the other morning: they were discussing one of the current distractions – illegal immigrants or interest rates or something, when the ABC reporter said something along these lines:
“We contacted the LIberal Party to ask them for details on their policy announcement, and they referred us to a News Limited publication”.

Seriously – that blew me away – this is a watershed moment in the credibility of the commercial media , if the 51%-hijacked-by-nutbags-Party is telling the ABC to contact The Australian in order to obtain details of its policy initiatives, then we are essentially living in Russia, or Albania, or some other corrupt and decrepit society where money puts governments in place and money determines the national dialogue as led by the mass media.

Can we assume it’s the result of a captive breading program?

What else is Canberra for?

Well it’s far cheaper to have peeps on the dole rather than twiddling their thumbs doing SFA in an office and paying ’em a motza..

Is that like breading a fish fillet?

No, that’d be like a typo.

What a marvellously modern world we live in. Who would have guessed in 1987 that by 2016 public servants would be 52% more productive? Can we assume it’s the result of a captive breading program?

Is that like breading a fish fillet?

Labour are thinking of bringing back the TV license. The budget is that bad they have to penny pinch.

Labour are admitting the economy is so bad that the banks may fail and they want money to save them.
