This weekend marks the start of the ski season, and for the last couple of weeks, conditions have been good for snowmaking so if you’re heading to ski fields, enjoy. A little closer to home, don’t forget that Corrin Forest offers an easy family snow experience, complete with a log fire to roast marshmallows on afterwards. It is both World Knit in Public Day and World Gin Day this Saturday. There must be a great opportunity to combine these two activities, especially if you are new to either. The Canberra Handmade markets are on and the Old Bus Depot Markets are hosting their annual Kids in the Shed themed markets this Sunday. Opening weekend at Corin Forest

If you can’t make it to Thredbo or Perisher, why not go to Corin Forest to celebrate the opening of the ski season? The freezing nights and crisp mornings we’ve had lately have been great for making snow, so there should be enough of the white stuff to build a snowman, throw a snowball, ride a toboggan and maybe even ski or snowboard. Check Corin Forest’s Facebook page for snow cover updates. Facilities at the Forest include a snow-play area for tobogganing; a gentle ski slope with a magic carpet ride, perfect for learning to ski or snowboard; and a cafe with an open fireplace you can roast marshmallows on, and a wood-fired pizza oven. Numbers on the ski slope and in the snow-play area are limited so best to book ahead online.
Handmade Markets
Where: EPIC Exhibition Park
When: June 10 – 11, 10 am – 4 pm
The Handmade Markets, a Canberra institution, are on this weekend. With over 250 stalls selling clothes, homewares, accessories, jewellery, kid’s stuff, and much more there will be something for everyone. Local fashion designers Rockstars and Royalty, Zilpah Tart, Wendy Voon and Zoe Georgiou will be there, along with local jewellers Jane Brown Pearls, Vetro e Metallo, and newcomer, Blossom and Beau. Brighten up your home with products by Laughing Bird, Ink & Weave, Blue Radish, Femke Texiles, Birdy & Clementine, Hayden Youlley and LousieM. And take a break from shopping in the gourmet food hall where there will street food, wine and spirit tastings, artisan produce and live music.
Katie Noonan & Karin Schaupp

Singer, Katie Noonan and guitarist, Karin Schaupp will be performing their latest co-creation, Songs of the Latin Skies this weekend at The Street Theatre. Inspired by the South American traditions of bossa nova, samba, salsa and tango, their songs interpret the work of Gilberto Gil, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Luis Bonfa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and more. Katie Noonan is one of Australia’s most versatile vocalist, and Karin Schaupp is an internationally sought-after guitarist. Together they put a fresh spin on Latin jazz and classical pieces from the musical masters of South America.

Making do: ‘Jugaad’ with Trent Jansen
Where: Nishi Gallery
When: 10 am – 1 pm
At this workshop, design anthropologist, Trent Jansen will teach the ad hoc making and repair process of Jugaad, an Indian notion of doing just enough with what you have on hand and figuring it out as you go. Over three hours, workshop participants will make and repair objects based on what’s around. Alongside Trent, Canberra-based sculptor Jeremy Lepisto will share his knowledge to help participants solve problems and develop workarounds. This workshop is being held in conjunction with the Porosity Kabari exhibition at Nishi Gallery which shows the results of an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural collaboration between Trent Jansen, artist/architect Richard Goodwin, and Indian design thinker Ishan Khosla. The trio worked together over three weeks to produce furniture and object pieces made from materials sourced from junk markets in Mumbai, India.
World Knit in Public Day

Proudly pull out your knitting needles and wool this Saturday and head down to Trove Canberra to knit in public! Bring what you’re working on or start something new, Trove Canberra is hosting Canberra’s World Knit in Public Day. If you don’t know how to knit, maybe you could learn. There will be knitters and crocheters on hand to show you, and plenty of needles, hooks and wool to get you started. Who knows, you might get hooked! World Gin Day Dinner

To celebrate World Gin Day, Muse is hosting a 4-course dinner, designed by Head Chef Steven Sweeny, to be paired with McHenry Distillery gin cocktails. The evening will be hosted by Phillip A. Old Bus Depot Markets: Kids in the Shed

This Sunday it’s the popular Kids in the Shed themed market. A great day for the family there will be entertainment from Milo the Clown, Chilled Out Kids Knit will show kids how to arm knit, the Canberra Reptile Zoo will be there with live reptiles to pet, there will be pony and donkey rides, a jumping castle and face painting. And there will specialise stalls including Bandicute Designs who hand-make clothes for babies and kids, and stalls selling handcrafted toys, kids’ room accessories and artworks.
Monday
Sri Chinmoy half-marathon, 5 & 2 mile races
Where: Telopea Park
When: From 8 am
The annual Canberra Sri Chinmoy Half-Marathon is on this Public Holiday Monday and it involves running 13 times around a scenic one-mile loop of Telopea Park. If a half-marathon is too far, there will be 5 mile and a 2 mile races as well. And after you’ve run there is usually someone cooking delicious pancakes to re-fuel. All races start near the car park along Telopea Park East. Registration from 8am, the half-marathon starts at 9am and the other races start at 9:30am.
