It’s an Absolutely Fabulous weekend with movie premieres, the Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony, scavenger hunts and the famous Canberra Baby & Beyond Expo. These are just our picks, so please let us know what else is on around town in the comments below.

Canberra Baby & Beyond Expo

When: 9am-3pm Sat and Sun | Where: Exhibition Park, Flemington Road, Mitchell

Expected to be bigger and better than ever, the 2016 Canberra Baby & Beyond Expo offers the latest in products, services, support, advice and entertainment for the family. The Saturday program is filled with advice for expectant parents and parents of newborns, including sleep advice, baby massage and more. Sunday offers a special treat for the little ones with the Peppa Pig Stage Show and Peppa meet and greet sessions. Children 16 years and under are free, and adult tickets can be purchased at the venue or online for $10.

 

Canberra Scavenger Hunt

When: 1pm-4pm Sat and Sun | Where: Starting at Canberra Glassworks, Wentworth Avenue, Kingston

Prior scavenger hunts have been completely sold out, so it’s no wonder that this Canberra Amazing Race-style challenge is set to cause some excitement this weekend. Join in by meeting at Canberra Glassworks with a team of 3-5 (singles or pairs will be teamed up), and then race around town looking for tricky clues, performing witty challenges and searching for hidden gems. International Blues Music Day

When: 2pm-11:30pm Sat | Where: Harmonie German Club of Canberra, Jerrabomberra Avenue, Narrabundah

If you like blues music, you won’t want to miss out on International Blues Music Day, hosted by the Canberra Blues Society at the Harmonie German Club in Narrabundah. It will feature 12 local and interstate acts on two stages, non-stop music from start to finish, and an array of vinyl records, CDs and books, art, photography and blues merchandise. Raffle prices include an acoustic guitar and amp. Food available from the Harmonie German Club restaurant and bistro. Tickets start from $20. Visit Canberra Blues Society for more information.

Sarah McLeod – Alone and Unplugged

When: 8pm-10pm Sat | Where: Front Gallery and Café, Wattle Place, Lyneham

If you’re in the mood for a little rock music instead, see Sarah McLeod Live at the Front Gallery and Café in Lyneham. Sarah is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who has worked with leading rock bands such as The Superjesus. She’s currently touring the country solo, performing acoustic versions of songs from her repertoire. Tickets are just $28.50 and can be purchased online. Please note this is an 18+ event only.

 

Red Bellied Black Hearts V Brindabelters

When: 6pm-9pm Sat | Where: Southern Cross Basketball Stadium, Cowlishaw Street, Greenway

The Canberra Roller Derby League is Canberra’s all-female, flat track roller derby league – comprised of 100 active skaters split into four teams. This weekend the Red Bellied Black Hearts will play off against the Brindabelters at Southern Cross Basketball Stadium, for game four in the CRDL 2016 season. Tickets are available through Moshtix or at the door.

 

Rio Opening Ceremony

When: Starts 7pm Sat | Where: PRIME7

Don’t forget to watch a once-every-four-year event with the best of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony, starting at 7pm Saturday night on PRIME7.

Winter Festival

When:10am-4pm Sun | Where: National Portrait Gallery, King Edward Terrace, Parkes

The National Portrait Gallery is holding their annual Winter Festival this Sunday. Ice sculptor Glenn Smith will create a larger than life ice sculpture, Etcetera Duo will return with an eclectic mix of comedy, mime, magic and illusion, and there will be an opportunity to participate in a range of artwork and winter-inspired fun activities. The event is for all ages, and is free to the public.

 

Absolutely Fabulous High Tea

When:10:30am-12:30pm Sun | Where: Dendy Canberra, Bunda Street, Lvl 2, Canberra Centre

To celebrate the release of Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders’ Absolutely Fabulous featuring Gwendoline Christie, Cara Delevingne, Jon Hamm, Rebel Wilson and Joan Collins, Dendy Canberra is offering an Absolutely Fabulous High Tea, complete with premium lounge movie tickets, leather reclining chairs, a glass of sparkling (or juice) on arrival, mini cucumber sandwiches and quiches, scones with jam and cream, mini muffins, choc dipped strawberries and a pot of tea. Adult tickets are $70 and can be pre-purchased online. Absolutely Fabulous is classified M.
