Alysia Walsh is an experienced real estate agent at VERV Property – one of Canberra’s only boutique property businesses – who is passionate about all things property and ensuring her clients get what they really want.
Region Media sits down with Alysia to get to know her beyond her professional capacity and to talk all things country.
In one sentence, who are you and what do you do?
I’m just an everyday girl, someone who is a naturally sociable person and I really thrive off meeting new people and helping them to realise their dreams.
What’s a fun fact most people don’t know about you?
One thing that surprises most people is that I’m a qualified graphic designer. I studied graphic design at uni and got all of my qualifications sorted and everything before I had a career change about five years ago. My creative outlet is where I find my Zen, and I’m trying to get back into it at the moment, whether that’s through doing corporate logos or other odd jobs.
What do you like best about your job?
Just the sheer diversity of it. Each day is completely different from the one before, and I get such a kick out of showing people new and exciting properties around Canberra, and especially seeing the excitement in their eyes when they find the perfect new home.
What was your childhood like?
I grew up in Wagga Wagga, a country town in rural NSW. It was a beautiful time when kids could just be kids, and we spent a lot of time swimming in the river or simply being outside. There wasn’t the kind of technology available to us like there is today so we really had to make our own fun. What’s amazing is that I’m still best friends with some of my childhood companions. In fact, my best friend and I have known each other for more than 28 years.
Although these days I don’t get home as often as I’d like, I really enjoy taking my daughter out to see her grandparents as much as I can. I’d like her to experience some of the country life that I was so blessed with.
Tell us about your first day of school.
Like many country kids, I went to a primary school within walking distance of my house, although when I first started, I had to get the bus as it was a little far for my five-year-old legs to carry me. However, on my first day I managed to miss the one and only bus home. As you can imagine, I was pretty distraught as I was the only kid who had to wait after hours by myself for my parents to come and pick me up – on my first day! Luckily, my schooling life only improved from there.
What was your first job?
When I was 16, I first worked as a waitress in a cafe. I still remember the job interview as being very daunting and I really had absolutely no idea what I was doing, or what I needed to say. However, I naturally find it easy to chat to people so the job suited me well.
What do you like doing in your spare time?
I’m a pretty active person and love getting to the gym. I used to play team sports such as softball and netball, but these days I’m pretty into bodybuilding and I am often to be found training of an evening. Otherwise, you might find me riding my bike around Canberra with my 10-year-old daughter.
Where’s your favourite place in Canberra to show visitors?
This might be a bit controversial as I am well and truly a northside girl at heart, but I love taking visitors to the inner-south. The streets around some of the older and more established suburbs are gorgeous, whether with all of the greenery in summer or the crisp leaves in autumn.
