General:

The ABC informs us of a non-debate between Jacqui Burke and Katy Gallagher on the future of our health system.

Ms Gallagher spoke of the need to provide enough services to cope with a surge in demand in the future.

“The time for reform is now and everyone is engaged and I think that presents us with a real opportunity,” she said.

Mrs Burke focused much of her address on what she saw as problems in the public health system.

“We have now reached a place where we need to get the basics right before we can move on with anymore grandiose promises,” she said.

Mrs Burke says she wants health spending to be better targeted and more GPs.

Liberals:

Brendan Smyth is stamping his tiny feet and demanding Mr Stanhope release the pre-election analysis of the Territory’s financial performance. It’s scheduled to come out next week and I’ll wager that’s when we’ll see it.

(The Lib’s slovenly web-monkey has now realised that Brendan’s release was time sensitive so it’s now been posted a second time with the dates and numbers correct.)

AMP:

No movement on their website, but the Motorists Party is, according to the radio, now running six candidates. They also support a dragway and oppose light rail.

ABC report now online:

Andrew Simmington and Denis Walford will stand in Ginninderra, David Cumbers and Joe Hlubucek in Molonglo and Geoff Rake and Burl Doble in Brindabella.

ALP:

Katy Gallagher’s been off giving blood and thinks more of us should do the same.

CAP:

New CAP candidate Roger Nicoll is promising a three pronged plan to get more GP’s in the local workforce.

Haven’t the motorist party read the recent RiotAct thread about cyclists?
If they supported light rail, they’d have less traffic, thus making motoring easier.
Isn’t that how it works?

The AMP seems to want to spend lots of money on things they like, with the only reduction in revenue flagged being a cut to registration for hybrid vehicles. It doesn’t seem very considered.

The devil is in the detail and I’ll reserve judgment until I see the policies, but so far “Bart no like, bad medicine”.

From the Motorist Party news report it seems they have put a lot of thought into arriving at their anti-light rail stance. Do they really think 85% of commuters ant to sit in a car and have it then stand empty in a car park for 10 hours so they can then crawl home with all the other commuters ? If offered a viable choice of options including a proper mass-transit public transport system, the evidence is that people choose that option ahead of the private car.

Its sad that a pro-motorist party seems to think that it needs to be anti-public transport. A properly integrated public transport system will deliver enormous social benefits that further commuter congested roads cannot.

On election related health issues:

It took Alan Kerlin (of the GCC) finally ringing up “Opposition Leader Talkback” on ABC 666 last Friday to prise out of Zed whether or not the Liberals will actually be supporting the proposed medical centre in Gungahlin along as well as their GP clinics.

The answer was in the affirmative but it really does not inspire confidence when the Liberals aren’t exactly forthcoming in their willingness to explain their policy positions up front. See: http://the-riotact.com/?p=8477 for details.

Jacqui Burke is as talented as she is gorgeous.
