Election Wrap - 12 October

Sim Challenge:

The RiotACT Sim Challenge got a mention in the Weekend Australian with Christian Kerr describing it as “the perfect metaphor for Canberra and its parliament“. I’ve taken him in about as much context there as he did us. It’s not online but lurking on page 29 of the Weekend Inquirer section.

Civic:

The Fyshwick based Canberra Times is having a whinge that Civic is “on the scrap heap” in this election despite constant development and beautification.

Launches:

The election campaign has been running for many long months now. The Canberra Times informs us that the last frantic effort to attract media attention has been underway in the farcical “campaign launches” for both parties.

Liberals:

Zed Seselja and Vicki Dunne are promising to de-congest your roads and insulate your homes to fight climate change. Amongst other things.

Labor:

Katy Gallagher is getting her daily exercise throwing rocks at the hole where a Liberal health policy should be.

Andrew Barr’s madd skillz announcement is now online.

Greens:

The Greens have put out a significant release bearing the number of the beast:

In it they call for a “cooperative Assembly” and suggest they could work with either party to form a Government. The Greens are calling on the major parties to sign up with them to a five point “Commitment to Canberra”:

    1. Committing all parties to respect the vote of Canberrans at the election, and to agree to work positively and cooperatively in minority government, if that’s what Canberrans vote for on October 18.

    2. Supporting balanced budgets over the economic cycle.

    3. Agreeing to work with other MLAs after the election to formulate an agreed policy program for the benefit of all Canberrans which recognises the challenges of climate change and financial uncertainty.

    4. Committing to improving community consultation and the accountability of government.

    5. Agreeing not to place misleading advertising, or to misrepresent the policies of other parties.

I thought Christian Kerr’s article in the Australian on the ACT election was pretty poor and very uninformative and the reference to the Sim Challenge as “the perfect metaphor for Canberra and its parliament” ridiculous. That comment is slur on both Riot ACT and the ACT itself.

But it was I suppose good advertising for the site.

I will never respect this kind of person.

I don’t respect it whether they’re knifing Joy Burch, or Gungahlin Al or, as I suspect, candidates from their own party who are scrabbling for the Liberal vote. So much for party unity, hey? So much for being fit to govern. I am completely disgusted.

I have met a lot of candidates from all walks of life in the lead-up to this election, and there are only one or two that I seriously dislike. Many I have grown to like immensely. I don’t think any of them deserve that, frankly. If you don’t like their policies or what they stand for, don’t vote for them.

When I finally lay my head down tonight, I won’t have to wipe the blood from my knife first. Oh, and I will still be here rioting on October 19.

I quizzed someone at the ALP stand at the Getup function today on those ‘green’-tinged posters for Labor. The answer was that the candidate (name?) is quite passionate about the environment and has some green runs on the board. Maybe Andrew Barr? Goldfish brain strikes again. Simon Corbell was off to one side taking quite some interest in the subject.

I meant to go back and have a chat as I used to work with his Dad and saw him (the Dad) a few years ago when I was hosting a fundraiser for Diabetes ACT (which Mr C senior at the time was involved with — and may still be for all I know), but Mr C junior was not to be found).

I had an interesting chat with the ALP media guy who bigged it up for RA.

The first page of a google search reveals Giulia was employed by a hard-right anti-abortion lobby group/wing of the Liberal party known as the Women’s Forum Australia. Although to be fair they are not solely focussed on abortion. They have done good things in regard to the image of women in the media and more.

i don’t really see what maryhow’s done wrong here, she pointed out the guilia is hard right, which is well known and due to her actions on previous right wing campaigns is on the public record and suggested that she was rude at the shops, a point she’s not been alone in making and one that gets levelled at just about every single pollie

maryhow is dead on the money about guilia being from the hard hard hard right of the libs; she even ran the anti-RU486 campaign a while back.

interesting aside her and zed are best freinds for ever.

If you are planning on defaming a person, it is probably wise to consult your lawyer beforehand. For instance, a defence of truth is useful as I understand it. That would mean some factual evidence of candidate misconduct. Put up or shut up. I despise your kind.

There needs to be some investigation of Candidate Conduct in this election.

I will start with one of the Candidates and others can inform the readers of others.

Giulia with a “G” is from what I hear is an extreme part of the right wing of the liberal party. Like we need more right wing christian nut cases in Government like we need more drunk ministers. She didn’t turn up to the Womens Electoral Lobby breakfast because she didn’t want to be outed for her extreme views on Abortion and right to life. How come no one prints that. Not enough honesty in the media, thank heavens for Riot Act.

Giulia has run a less than dignified campaign turning up to my local shopping centre and taking over the crossing with what seems like 10 people so you can’t even get a trolley in or out of the shopping centre. All her material seems like it came stright out of head office. As if she is getting us a pool, or the extention to the GDE or Green Bins. There is nothing on her material about how long she has been here or what she has done for Canberra. Thats because she is a blow in and will be a blow out after she doesn’t get elected. These people annoy me.

AT least all the Labor Candidates have been here for some time and have helped in the community.

1. Committing all parties to respect the vote of Canberrans at the election, and to agree to work positively and cooperatively in minority government, if that’s what Canberrans vote for on October 18.

‘Respect the vote’? As opposed to what? ‘zed instead’ tanks rolling through Garema place?

2. Supporting balanced budgets over the economic cycle.

Um. Aren’t you the party that has ‘statement of principals’ instead of costed policies?

3. Agreeing to work with other MLAs after the election to formulate an agreed policy program for the benefit of all Canberrans which recognises the challenges of climate change and financial uncertainty.

What an outrageously bold demand! I can just imagine the dulcet tones of kumbaya ringing out in the background as the greens workshopped this wise nugget.

4. Committing to improving community consultation and the accountability of government.

I’m sorry, I’m voting for the party with the least consultation.

5. Agreeing not to place misleading advertising, or to misrepresent the policies of other parties.

You have to have policies in order to have them misrepresented.

I am a small business owner and find the thought of greens in government disturbing. I even put Deb Foskey 3 or 4 last time and what the heck did she do? Now the economy is slowing, my orders are slowing down and what are we gonna get? Nimbinites and whale huggers to take care of things. I urge everyone else to vote for some other independents, not greens.

Sunday Times is also reporting Andrew Barr as promising a “new online community feedback service ‘Fix My Street’ that would enable Canberrans to report issues such as graffiti, potholes and lighting.”

Strange – GCC launched just this service via our website a couple of months ago – as discussed here on RA – and we have registered http://www.fixmystreet.net.au.

We also publicised the service in the latest issue of Gungahlin Smokesignals newsletter, and I know Andrew read this, as every person at our Meet the Candidates night last Wednesday received a hard copy, and they all got soft copies last Monday too.
