Election Wrap - 21 September

General:

The Canberra Times is vying for the most vacuous reportage on the election with a brand analysis by a marketing academic (those who can, do). On this basis Zed’s looking great and Labor should have gone with Katy.

I like the Labor radio ads on everything labor has done for Canberra and the sarcastic “gee this will be quick” line in it. Everytime I hear it I immediately think “HAHA! yeah it will be!” and tune out for the rest of the BS. Clever and attention grabbing ads, Labor = 0, Liberal = 5 (or there abouts).

Katy is bathed in a halo on the TV ads. ie: Vote for the toothy smile on this side of the screen and we’ll give ya the miserable grouchy bully on the other side.

Saturation ALP ads on the commercial FM station I had on over the weekend…

Big colour ad in the Times featuring their new education policy on school class sizes, with a big photo of Stanhope and Gallagher, but most curiously not the Education Minister…

Poor Katy! No-one should have to campaign with that sort of a liability.

And the onslaught begins. I too saw the ALP ads and for one was revealed that the wait was over. Their silence was disturbingly ominous.

Is Katy Gallagher popular? Does anyone have any sources on ALP member popularity?

I for one like Barr over Gallagher but he has a long way to go after having to shoulder the burden of the school closures policy.

The ALP Ads have Stanhope always in a shot next to Katy.

I think they’re going for a “Change in governmnent without changing the Government”, and planning to shoehorn Katy Gallagher into the CM role the moment Stanhope looks tired\sneezes\feels old\mentions retirement.

Anyone feel like running some numbers on their extra police\hospital beds\teachers, and find out if they’re keeping pace with demand or population growth?

No party will outspend the ALP, with the might of its poker machine revenue.

Labor’s spend may well even outmatch the combined spend of all other parties. You will be hard pressed to view an ad break without seeing a Labor ad.

And they were advertising on TV last night on both WIN and SC-Ten.

Has the ALP actually done anything in the way of marketing yet? I don’t think I’ve seen a single thing from them yet…

I got personally addressed mail from Jon and Katy this morning. Although it went straight into the bin.

teepee, Would the reduction in lanes have anything to do with Liberal and Save the Ridge legal challenges? Your team can’t fight the implementation of something, then scream blue murder when the policy’s late in delivery because of those same delaying tactics.
But a piece of advice for you teepee – running around claiming the GDE is a broken promise makes you look foolish. The road is there. Whether its built to your satisfaction is a small technicality that is overlooked in punter-land.

build me a GDE in tuggeranong. I would have killed for a 4-lane firebreak back when the fires came through.

Yes tom-tom & Aurelius. They promised a 4 lane road in the 2001 election when Jon Stanhope was first elected Chief Minister. And we wound up with two lanes missing.

I rate that as a broken promise, which would call into question future promises from Jon Stanhope.

Katy’s not much sweeter smelling. She was the one who made a pledge on not closing schools as Education Minister and initiated the decisions to break the grand promise.

I might trust Andrew Barr, he has not been in a position yet to make a promise and then do the dirty. But he’s not running for Chief Minister – Jon Stanhope is.

Well they’re advertising here, and all over Facebook, and heavy googleadage too.

And keeping their powder dry for the run home I’d guess.

Interesting to see how it pans out.

Aurlieus; dont bother arguing with people like teepee it just gives them oxygen…. it’s much better (and funnier) to laugh at all these libs that sit on here and tell each other how fantastic they are instead of going out and trying to convince the average punter to vote for them.

teepee,
He broke a promise about the GDE?
Need someone point out that big road slightly to the west of Black Mountain?

Some last minute listening and backflips by Labor would be fine … if it weren’t for the fact that Jon Stanhope has such a track record of breaking election promises. eg: GDE, school closures, etc

JR, maybe they’re all listening to you? 🙂

JR, it matters not who is pushing the barrow, or who has similar barrows. It’s a good barrow.

Except its the ALP campaigning on an original issue they opposed and the problem the ALP originally created… is that hypocrisy or just irony?

Was just in Gungahlin Marketplace, and a ALP candidate, Eleanor Bates, is collecting names on a petition to make Hibberson Street a pedestrian mall.

@Aurelius:

That is such old news its not funny – shows you to what extremes candidates will go to simply to be populist.

I was on the forefront of the original campaign to make portions of Hibberson Street a pedestrian precinct around the concept of a town square years ago… But guess what, it was the ALP that rejected the idea despite the community being overwhelmingly in favour.

I’m sure I could dredge up more links if you want… so lets get this right, six and a half years later some no-name candidate from the ALP realises that the community was right… gees there must be an ACT election soon!

yeah johnboy, ‘cos the daily smelly does SUCH a good job of discussing the issues.

The mall is a great idea – I actually like Gungahlin shops, as you are often outside, instead of closed into a mega mall.

I’ve thought for a while this would be desirable, at least during the daylight hours. Just like Bunda Street in the city, it’s useless as a thoroughfare with all the pedestrian crossings, so they may as well add extra parking to other areas, turn that into a pedestrian mall, and make it safer, more pleasant and better for shoppers.
